I've been wanting to do one of these for ages , now I'm getting started I've realized i know more of what i don't want than what i do ! So this is going free style
What its not having is a stock body , waterproof radio box , torsion springs or stock front springs .
What i have is a well used Rough Rider chassis that's fairly early production , its a bit rough so its never going to be a concourse car and that suits me as i want to run it .
This is how it arrived .



This is where it is now ,its cleaned up, the springs are replaced with coil springs and 3d printed collars , the chassis is 3mm CF with a formed 0.8mm aluminium coated steel tray outer , its very stiff .




I'm not 100% what happens next , maybe a metal tube frame , maybe a scale Funco replica , not sure ....

Had a little fun today .


the black plastic T connectors between the copper pipe and the alloy roll hoop are just temporary , ill replace them with subtle screws later , i just wanted to hold them in place while i work .

Think I've made my mind up, what I'm going to try to do is a fairly faithful scale model of the Funco SS1 sand rail frame , commonly thought of as the inspiration for the Rough Rider , after the frame is done I'm planning on 3d printing or maybe making steel body panels in the sections originally fitted to the Funco SS1 , two separate side pods , a forward nose section and two rear side engine cover panels .

Front frame finished except a few fixings for bodywork .

The rear frame section is nearly finished , nose bodywork prototype is on the printer .

surface finished added , it worked well to the rear cage but the front needs doing again , also v2 proto body , its just a tad narrow and the body post hole was in the wrong place so v3 is printing now .

A clever use of copper tube: it's readily available, easy to bend, solder, etc., and it's certainly strong enough for the intended application. Very nice indeed.

The front section of the cage is virtually unstressed anyway , its not structural other than the roof section in a roll , the rear section could take some damage but that might actually add to the charm . Its just copper brake pipe for full size cars , very easy to work with and solders nicely too , to turn it silver grey I used a chemical called Liver of sulphur , its not overly hard wearing so I'll clear coat it as well .

The trick is I do the design work in my sleep and the physical work when I'm awake , means I get things done twice as fast ......or it means I'm obsessed ,one or the other
