Re: Real Jay Halsey raced RC10 or Replica? Restore Project!!
So the seller finally got back to me. He said the car was purchased in a lot with other cars about 15 or 20 years ago. There's a few other cars he has on auction but there's nothing special about them. He also said the aluminum wheels pictured were not the original wheels that came with the car when he got it. He also said he replaced the front end because he bent the original front plate and braces. That probably explains the difference in color with the gold anodizing. He also doesn't no much else about the car.
Anyone know if the Associated Protech body came in a light weight version? This body appears to be a thinner, lighter material....much thinner than the Protech bodies produced today. If I recall, most of the earlier bodies from the 80's were a bit thicker.

Just wondering does that chassis have a stamp on it as that rear bulkhead is one of the early ones, also noticed the rear tower is countersunk for the esc or the receiver to be mounted on not many bashers would have done that?

Restore Project!!
Bringing one of my old threads back from the dead.
After moving all of my old RC stuff from storage in my parent's garage, and joining a few RC Groups on Facebook, I've finally decided to restore the original Halsey RC10 to period correct status. Based on this picture from the 1987 IFMAR Worlds, I'd date the car from 1987.

I can't believe this car ever belonged to Jay Halsey. WAY to many details point me to a NO like other have mentioned. The signature is also easy to copy...

Thanks JOESGARAGE. (5 years later)JOESGARAGE wrote: ↑Sun Jul 13, 2014 7:53 pm Yes, I have emailed pictures of the car. He verified that the car at one point belonged to him.
Not looking to sell it to make money anyway. I may sell it one day to another collector when I'm on my death bed. LOL
There were lots of questionable things about the vehicle that had me scratching my head.
1. Who the hell would ruin or run Jay's car if it was really his?
2. Why is there a stealth tranny with a black motor plate on the car? Who ever installed it did a great job drilling the tranny holes and making them countersunk and flush.
3. Nose plate isn't notched or nose brace tubes trimmed like Jay's early cars.
4. Wheels and tires ain't right
5. If this car and body is 30+ years old but wasn't Jay's, was there collectors like us 30 years ago building detailed replicas of pro rc cars and were pictures readily available (pre internet days)?
6. Why is the rear shock tower holes countersunk? Same with the rear chassis that attaches to the motor plate? Don't think a basher would go the extra mile and countersink those holes.
Whether it was his or not, I'm still restoring it to something close to what he ran back in 86-87.
FYI, the stealth tranny will be refurbished and used in my NIX91 which I will build one day.

I think Joe was referring to his own buggy. Like others have stated, I can hardly find any similarities between yours and the other images. The holes in the pan are even in the wrong places. If in the passing chance it was one of Jay Halsey's, it's been used and modified so much over the years by third parties that a famous driver it may have belonged to is no longer relevant. Just enjoy it for what it is, a nice runner.

No, we didn't have the internet (back then) but we did have some good R/C magazines.
Halsey's cars and mods were well documented and copied by many including me back in 1985.
The RC10 was new and Jay won a Championship with it, anybody racing that wanted to win followed his lead.
