Help me ID the vintage of this RC10

Post by Ron Jeremy »

Howdy,
This was the first kit I bought when I thought it would be cool to buy an old kit. I bought it in 2001 or 2002 on eBay. Was MIB. I built it.
This is the exact car that has been on Wikipedia's Associated Electrics and RC10 (now defunct) pages since Jan 2007 when some jackwagon (RyanHThompson) uploaded it, claiming it was his. I later added the note that it was mine ;)

The rest from the set

Why did the RC10 page get deleted?

Anyways, here are the pics I just took. The front tires are different because for some reason I decided to use the originals on a drag car project (which I still have, but they are hashimoto'd). Steve Pond convinced me that they were not the old, old tire version, so I was eh... may as well use them for something else. lol

Mega-res images to help understand where in the timeline this kit was made

It's what we call a mid Edinger. These came with unmarked Pro-line tires. Pro-line sold the same ones that had "Pro-line" molded in the sidewall.

Have you checked out this post/thread?

https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=13059

I've ID'd five RC10 using the info in that thread. Very complete info.
With my limited knowledge I noticed the following:

1) Your box seems to have the kit number, etc stamped directly on the box. According to the link above, Cadillac boxes had a printed label adhered to the box.
2) Your rear shock spring cups fit inside the springs and have a lip for the spring to rest on. Early Edingers had a spring cup which fit around the outside of the spring.
3) Your chassis seems to be stamped form underneath. Earliest Edingers were not stamped, first to be stamped were like yours, form underneath, later they were stamped from on top.

And, in regards to scr8p's comment above, this is what the post has to say:

"The early front tires are a 7 rib (The 2 center ribs are fused, the tires have been called 8 rib in the past) with Good Year on the early and no Good Year on the early to mid generation. Mid generation had Proline grooved tires part #6866. Cadillac Cars had a 4 rib. Late Edinger cars had 4 rib front tires like the Cadillac cars."

One thing I'm wondering (and maybe someone more knowledgeable can clarify) is why the tub and nose piece have a different color anodizing. It having been replaced in the past wouldn't make much sense since the car looks quite immaculate. Maybe it indicates a transition era?

Again, from the above mentioned thread: "The Cadillac and mid to late Edinger anodizing tends to be a darker gold."

Very nice car by the way. Looks splendidly preserved.

Thanks for the sweet replies.
Bakauata, I read that thread after I started this one. But for some reason about 3/4 of the pics didn't show. Now they do, though.

In that thread I see there is at least 1 pic of the front tires that came with my kit, but didn't realize there was any mention of them specifically in the text. So they are Proline grooved tires part #6866? (the old pics, not the new ones).

I built the kit in 2001 or 2002 right after receiving it and it has sat in a cabinet ever since. Although it does look like at some point I changed up the battery holders. I also noticed the anodizing color differences. Wasn't anything I did. I still have the box, body, wing (w/ teardrop wing buttons), stickers, toolkit, and printed materials.

Sadly, I am probably selling this (and 40'ish other kits, most of which are vintage and mint) soon. I have been not participating in the hobby for several years now and I am just generally on a mission to "de-clutter".

Any advice on the best way to go about getting best value out of these kits? Thought about eBay and this site, but not sure.

Thanks again!

put them on ebay for the least you woud let them go for and let them ride...you'll get your best value right there. More audience and less tire kickers than facebook.
