Step away from the drill

Pet peeve of mine with the old school losi cars is the often random appearance of drilled holes in the chassis, mostly around the steering servo. I decided to give a try at designing a mount to eliminate the need for drilling but that would be stronger than servo tape alone.
This is what I came up with:

It has a recess on the bottom for servo tape

And ties into the steering bellcrank posts. It raises the posts up 1mm which will also help prevent the ballstuds hitting on the chassis and making arc shaped scratches as it goes through its travel

It is raised enough to give clearance for a large servo saver even on chassis without the clearance hole.

As a followup to that design I extended the mount to the rear and added a couple bosses on each side through which a 1-3/8 transmission screw is used to hold velcro for a battery mount. This gives a little more length to the battery mount area and extra height for modern batteries. It also ties the servo mount into the battery box screws so no need for servo tape and it uses all stock screw locations. I used 4-40 screws in the inboard/forward 8-32 battery box holes as this gives the extra clearance needed for the longer battery. At the rear of the car is a shim, printed in yellow, that raises the whole rear assembly up to give more height to the battery opening in the bulkhead for todays taller lipo packs.

Even though I'm not a Losi fan, I can appreciate nice, well thought-out work.... and this update has this in spades! Great work, @aconsola !

Now, if you can do the same for the Schumacher Cougar, maybe tying into the Top Cat rear shock mounts.....

Some really nice problem-solving work being engineered in this place.... another reason why I come here.

This is cool! I may draw one up for my 10t... not sure if I can squeeze it in there. I like that 1mm raise to eliminate the chassis scraping!

Are you printing in PLA? Do you find any movement when steering?

I have printed in pla, petg and abs. All seem to work well. The taped on version keeps the servo well planted for bench testing. I have not yet had a chance to run any of them for real testing.

Someone read my mind. I was thinking this a while back myself. But I started from the battery first and was kind of an add on to our Lipo battery holders. Then got busy and never completed it. The other one was a top brace that held the servo. But I never even got that drawn up, too many other projects.

I haven't seen this topic before today, and am glad that I saw it now. That is an awesome idea! Every time I buy a used losi graphite chassis, there are always oddly placed holes around the servo allowing it to be secured with a zip tie. Drives me nuts. I'm not savvy enough to know thingiverse or be able to print anything like this myself; is there, or will there be, a way that it can be purchased?

Use Goop. The servo, esc or whatever will not come out but if you need to remove it you can with a bit of work. Best part is no residue left on chassis or harsh chemicals to remove it.
