Help with Early 3 speed I.D.
Picked this up at the track last night. No other parts came with it. The guys at the track were saying "bruiser", but I don't think so. I'm not very informed on these old Tamiya 3 speeds and I've never actually had one in my hands until now. I thought it looked more like the Blazing Blazer, but it has the wrong kind of tires from what I understand. The smaller aluminum rims means it's probably not a bruiser, mountaneer, etc. Not sure what other differences there are between all the old 3 speeds. Did they all share the same chassis? Looking for a little help from some Tamiya guys around here. Thanks

It’s a Tamiya 58028 Hilux. That would be the perfect chassis for a restomod runner

Re: Help with Early 3 speed I.D.
Thanks guys. That's what I was afraid of. I was sort of hoping it was more compatible with a bruiser/mountaineer since they've been on the wish list for a while. While I really dig the Blazing Blazer and the 4x4 Toyota, they are crazy hard to get parts for from what I've heard. The trans and axles appear sound on first inspection of this one. I'll probably give this one a good inspection/clean up and pass it on to help fund other projects. I have a feeling that if I took on this project, it would be sitting on my shelf for years while I accumulated enough parts to even get started. I have a few of those projects already in the works and my rc junkyard is getting a little out of control. Maybe it will make someones day to find these parts to help finish their project.

I think I'm just going to sell it. If I start fixing it up, I won't be able to part with it.
For all the trouble, it sounds like it would just be easier to buy a bruiser and probably be money ahead in the end. Thanks for all the good info and advise. I really appreciate it.

Re: Help with Early 3 speed I.D.
I´d say resto mod it.
Loops sells a rear bed, made to look like the original, but deep.
You can use std. Hilux hi-lift tires on the rims.
Ditch the original radiobox, install a modern ESC and radio gear.

that clone bruiser is 1/3 price of a real one ... if all you wanted to do is put it on a shelf and stare at it..thats the way to go.. im thinking abouttamiyadan wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 3:57 pm It comes down to if this is on your must have list or not.
my opinion is you have a parts chassis that would be used to fix up one or more trucks that were more complete but had some broken mechanical parts, then sell off what you didn't want to keep for spares.
the new bruiser isn't cheap as they are over 700$. there is a fake bruiser that is just as good for half the price.

but yup you would be into the restoration on that toyota 4x4 pick up for much more then it is worth in current condition.
the funny thing about 58028 is people call it the Hilux, because it is a 1979 toyota hilux step side but the correct name is actually "Toyota 4x4 pick up"
the Toyota Hilux from tamiya is actually 58086 which was the toyota Hi-lux monster racer. tamiya hilux became like a nick name but confuses some people since there was more then one Toyota that had the hi-lux badge on the body.
