Early 80's 1/12th motor

Hey Guys,
So, I picked up the JoMac Lightning from Dave here on the board, and am putting together the electronics for it. What would be an appropriate time period motor? I see old can motors from Parma and BoLINK but am unsure of their time period? This is my first " non-associated" 1/12th car so Im kind of starting over here. Thanks for any and all advise you have. Oh, and servo wise, I would love to put a novak in but I cant find one I am willing to pay for, what were other popular models at the time ( say '81-83). Thanks!

Pretty much any Igarashi based motor would be correct. The Jomac motors were labeled Jerobee. Search Igarashi for ideas. Reedy, Trinity, Leisure, MRP all did stock and modified versions as well.

Fantastic thank you! So, dumb question. I have seen JoMac and Jerobee armatures for sale listed as "imported". Does this mean there were some motors that were intended to be taken apart? Or were they all crimped cans? I have reverse engineered a couple of the associated 05 motors for a friends car, but they were crimped and that is the extent of my knowledge of motors from this period.

They look mint and unused to me.

The modified motors typically used 00-80 screws or just Mylar tape to secure the endbell after the crimp tabs were broken off and timing was reset/bearings added/brushes modified/arm rewound. A typical rewound arm would be 23 to 25 turns. Super hot for a six cell 1/12 car at the time.

All the armatures were "imported", the modifieds were stock arms dewound, either completely and then new wired rewound, or just a few turns removed from the stocker.

It's a lost art...

MRP, Parma, and Reedy/Associated would not jive with the Jomac sponsored racers at the time, although at the club level it didn't really matter. The big stock class races used handouts, so there's that angle...

Fantastic, ok that is making sense as I have seen screw heads on the can end on some old pictures. Time to do digging and see what I can find.

If you want to install an open endbell motor (ie Yokomo/Kyosho from the later 83/84 era) you need to butcher the left side motor pod:

Nooooo no butchering here, although I do run all of my cars I have a no butchering policy haha. I might still have some closed bell iggy motors in my parts box that I can build into a replica of a "modified" motor from the period. Might have to borrow Dan's work and build a servo based ESC to match....Hmmmmm this might get fun.

I appreciate the offer but I would hate to run "NIB" stuff, save them for shelfers . I just picked up a lot of motors on ebay, and think there is one in there that juuuust might work...

Is is a checkpoint? or an early fantom? The brush holders are not the slot car style. No decal or markings.....prototype?

Fantom must have got their cans from the same place
I thought I remembered seeing some checkpoint with the large hoods as well, but maybe not.

I’m not sure how to tell the difference 100%, but the armature night hold that info

I always heard Jim sold Fantom the cans and machined bits, but who knows. In either event I hope that motor looks at home in the lightning. Still need an ESC for it.....

This is a Fantom motor. Jim sold some cans to Fantom but they used the usual brush setup, not the slot brushes. So it´s easy to decide if it´s a Checkpoint or a Fantom.
