Barrel style Resistor heatsinks

I'm trying to figure out how the old barrel type resistor heat sinks were used. They seem to come in 2 threaded pieces. Can somebody show or explain please?

There are other ways to use it. Parma's for example was double barreled but sat horizonatally, servo taped on the servo top.

If you have one of the stock rheostats that came with the Edinger/Cadillac RC10 kits, you can use the barrel in lieu of the bar that AE gives you, but then you have to devise another mounting method. You coud cut and bend your own sheet of aluminum to get it mounted.

Good question. See the brown on the pic of my Parma immediately above? Probably depended on how much time the throttle operator spent with his wiper at anything lower than full open to the left (reverse is to the right in the photo). I remember it was pretty important to have full throttle well adjusted so the wiper button sat on that wide part only...or hence the heat on the band immediately adjacent.
