Gearing question with my Reedy modified motor

Can anyone tell me what pinion gear I should use for this (6 gear transmission) buggy and motor. I have a 54 tooth spur gear on it. Also...how many turns is this modified motor. I thionk I heard once that it is a 12 turn?????? Is that correct? I guess I cant have two pics in same thread so....I'll add another below.

Here is the motor I want to use. what is the turns of this motor and what size pinion should I use with a 54 tooth spur gear? I'll just be running it up and down my street at home. No racing.

Tom, it would be a complete guess on a gear for that. The motor wind itself is a guess, as all of the Reedy modifieds looked the same at that time. A 54t spur says you're using 32p gears, and who know what sized rear tires. Batteries are a big question, too. I'd say no one could even give you a rough idea of where to start with gearing.


Your best bet: stick any pinion on there (smaller is better to start with), and run it for a little while up and down the street. Touch your motor with your bare fingers and if you can keep your fingers on the motor for more than 3 or 4 seconds, it's not geared tall enough. Move to a bigger pinion until the motor is too hot to keep your fingers on longer than a few seconds...

Then come down one tooth on the pinion.


It's not scientific, but neither is running up and down in the street.

maybe you could send it out to someone who has a motor dyno and can match it to a similar motor to tell you roughly the wind on it. i would volunteer to do this for you but i sold my motor dyno =]

You should be able to pull the arm out of the motor and see if there are any markings on the stacks. Usually they mark how many turns and winds it is.

When I got the motor...someone had used a sharpy pen and wrote the number 12 on the endbell. Is it possible that it is equal to a 12 turn motor?

If it's a 12...that's a bit much for a six-gear. You will have a hard time finding a 9t pinion in 32p. As suggested, being a production mod the arm should be marked. Too bad the dot is missing from the can.

If that's correct then I'll just use a stock motor that I have here also. Actually it is the motor that I got with this buggy. It seems to run very smooth so maybe I'll just use that instead.

I'd stick with the stock motor for now with a 11-12t pinion. Robinson racing makes them from 9-22t in 32 pitch. You can get them at tower if you need them:
