Yokomo 870c Resto

I just picked up my first Yokomo 870c off the bay. It is a little rougher than I was expecting, but I do like restoring these old cars and racing them. Outside of the wrong front springs and broken front shock body, is there anything noticeably wrong with the buggy? I am already trying to figure out how to get the rear hub off with out totally grinding it up since some previous owner couldn't be bothered to use the proper set screw. If anyone of you Yok experts have advice for setups (and spare parts, ) let me know!

Looks pretty sweet overall. Check the fit of the bulkheads caps. They were available in white or black but are plastic blend not pure nylon. They can't be dyed without distortion so they could be painted or factory black or if pretty distorted someone may have tried to dye them.

Otherwise if you plan on running it, associated shocks are a better upgrade. As far as the rear hub, you can try and dremel a slot in the setscrew or worst case, use like a pinion puller to get it off the axle. It might score the axle but at least you can get it apart.

I agree that if you are going to run it the associated shocks are a better choice. I even have modern Schumacher shocks on the 870c that I run. If you want a used replacement set of 870c shocks bodies let me know , I have some in a bag of parts.

I would try to hold the hub in a vice on a drill press and drill out the hub with a left twist drill and centerpunch the work before starting so the bit won't wonder.

Always hard to tell from photos but it looks like you have a nice car there, just needs a little cleaning.

What size shocks do I need to use? Can I use modern big bores or the world's rere threaded shocks?

So I took the buggy apart, made assessments and cleaned it. Too bad the previous owner ca glued the servo to the chassis. I tried goof off and nail polish remover and couldn't get it to budge.

So far I need a black front shock tower, 2 king pin screws for the steering, battery straps, and m3x8 screws to hold the wheels on. I lucked out the guy who put the screw in the rear wheel hub used aluminum and I was able to drill it out and not mark the hub up. I had a new set screw on hand and it fit perfectly. So one less part to source. The car must have hit something hard as the left front universal and inner hinge pin were bent pretty good. Bearings have been ordered, so now its a waiting game.

Finally starting to receive parts. Build is going smooth so far. GoMachV made the chassis and top brace for me. I wanted a chassis without holes to better place the electronics. I also used the YR4 bulkheads to avoid breaking the magnesium pieces that are next to impossible to find. I can't wait to get this done and drive it!

Buggy is finally all together, just need to install electronics and paint the shark fin!

Buggy came out great, was it hard to source parts for the buggy, im thinking about buying one that seems a little beat up but I'm worried i wont be able to source parts to properly restore it, i know ebay is the place to go but lately there is not much on there. Other than ebay were's a good place to get parts.

eBay and the Vintage Yokomo facebook group are the sources I used. You will need to be very patient to source vintage Yokomo parts but its worth it in the end.
