Setting up my old car for the kids

I learned a lot from RC cars while growing up. I'm hoping to pass some of it along to my kids. So, I'm trying to drag my car into the 21st century. Simple things like getting compatible batteries, connectors, etc. so I can share with them.

be careful, this is the beginning story of a lot of the collectors on this forum.. including myself. pull out the old junk for the kids to play with, next thing you know you have doubled the size of the collection. It's all good fun though, and better than wasting money away on some other things.

I went looking for what I would need to modernize while I set up the account. I got enough to throw together some stuff on my amazon wishlist. I suspect since I have 2 kids and 1 car, my collection will triple or worse as they need beginner cars that won't last as long as an aluminum tub.

It's good education too. We've done the snap circuits thing, and aside from building the radio transmitter, the kids were bored by it and too little to grok the math. There are LOADS of teaching moments with these things. But yeah, my radio is old, my motor is sure to be killed soon (20 old Trinity Monster) and I'll probably go brushless when it does.

Any clue on battery protectors to go between a lipo and an old futaba speed controller? I saw one hobbytown link but it seemed to be for a certain controller and probably not mine.

Honestly, if it was me, I'd go buy the kids some ready-to-run Traxxas vehicles. Instead of having them break your vintage car(s).

Some people complain that they don't like the ready to run aspect, since they don't learn about the car because they don't assemble it....BUT, your RC10's will already be assembled anyways.

I'd get them a couple of Traxxas vehicles, they are darn near indestructible. If you want a buggy, maybe get the Bandit. If they want a truck, maybe a Slash 2wd or 4wd. You can get them with brushless power, and the RTR's should come with a lipo battery, but the supplied charger sucks.
