Plethora of 4wd replicas?

Post by yellowdatsun »

Is it just me, or do there seem to be a lot of 4wd projects? Back in the late 80's and early 90's, I never saw one 4wd RC10, ever. I can now see more in the first 10 posts here than I've ever seen in my life. What is the draw for everyone making these 4wd replicas? Is it just the draw of making something difficult, and making it work?

Personally, if I wanted a vintage 4wd car of that era, I'd buy another Optima.

Everything else has already been done, and the optima is due for re-release :-) hahaha

But seriously, it fits the "I always wanted one but couldn't afford it when I was a kid" thought process, so now I can and will. The ten4 was created because nobody wants to buy a mip and actually run it. They are too valuable (and honestly pretty crappy...errr I mean delicate)

3D printing has a lot to do with it too.

most of us are just playing the waiting game for parts now. wanted to do a 4wd kit fairly bad and this came out right in time.

just gotta decide how you want to make it happen.

I did race against a couple of these and in the right hands were pretty impressive. Yes I owned one which i never got around to finishing so sold it which i now regret but due to enjoying racing my B2 so much have gone OTT and decided the conversion is plausible using 3D technology so am doing it for fun and someones challenged me as well. Its fun.

Honestly, I'd be surprised that they are remotely effective when racing against other 4wd cars, since the weight on the RC10 is so rear-biased.

The "plethora" clip is a quote me and my friends still use regularly. Glad someone else also finds it humorous.

Well, as the first guy with one on the track (and co-developer with GoMachV) I can tell you the car is pretty respectable on the track running with modern cars. And that's with me not even having attempted to tune it yet. Give me some more time with it and I think it will keep up with about anything. And the weight distribution is better than a normal RC10, it's got a transmission, CVDs, etc up front after all. The car jumps super level, every bit as good as my B44.3. In fact, it's got the same wheelbase as my 44.3 and is only a little narrower in front. If you put wider arms on the rear it would be very close to a modern car as far as its proportions.
