I hope everyone is eating beans today to guarantee prosperity in the new year.

I put forth the idea of a big bean curry today, but have had it shot down.... will have to make do with a potato, pea and mince curry instead. Such is the life I am forced to lead

Will do something with beans in a couple of days...... thinking some black beans...... mmmmmmm.....

Chicken is bad luck for a New Years meal so you're canceling out the good fortune from the beans. :|

For what it's worth I'll have Joey's beer and Alex's chicken and pork. I don't discriminate...

Made a deep dish iron skillet pizza last night. Over the last 2 years I've really fallen in love with my iron stuff. Whenever I take it anywhere I can also get people to walk right into my favorite iron skillet joke. I say "Man, I love this iron skillet. I won't use any other brand." They ask "Is it a Lodge?" I say "Lodge?? Are you kidding me, this thing us HUUUGE!!". So there ya go...

Anyway, you can find a lot of recipes for this on line. They're all roughly the same. I went with Martha White's thin and crispy pizza dough mix, which is what I also use for my flat pizzas. Any packaged dry crust will do though(I add garlic powder though). Rub the bottom of the skillet and about an inch up on the side with about 2T butter and then roll out the crust pressing it up against the side a bit(if it doesn't want to stay don't worry over it too much). Then about 2 cups of Mozzarella. Top that with a healthy blanket of pepperoni. Then about a pound of cooked Italian sausage with caramelized onions in there. Then a few more pepperonis followed by your favorite pizza/spaghetti sauce. Go with about 12 oz or less. You don't want to drown it, just give it a bit of moisture. Then top with a little more mozz and Parmesan followed by a healthy sprinkle of your favorite pizza seasoning. I like Tone's. Then put it in a 450 degree oven for about 30 min. Let it stand about 15 min so the cast iron can finish cooking the crust and caramelizing the edges. It's pretty tasty. If you want, my Photobucket account has a series of pictures that can help with the build, but here is the finale. Enjoy! :D

Broke in my new panini maker with Pastrami and Swiss on rye. Man was it tasty with 1000 island dressing on the side.
