Just another RC10 Tube Chassis

Post by Spanky »

Hi everyone! Here's a tube chassis I've been tinkering on for quite some time. This one is actually a prototype, Serial Number 1. I have several of these chassis built with various changes to each one, but those haven't been photographed yet. I will be parting ways with this one, and several more since I need the $$ to continue building more of them. I wanted to contribute these photos to the forum since I got alot of inspiration digging around here.

The body is not mounted yet, mainly because the future owner may not choose the same mounting method as me. I had thought about velcro, zip ties, screws or even small bread tie wire to hold the body panels. The rear shock tower was replaced with a fiberglass plate for mounting ESC or receiver to. This was important because space is very limited.

All the suspension and tranny components are from a brand new RC10 Worlds kit, and the tranny was assembled by Team Associated since I had troubles with the gear mesh.

The chassis is all made of steel 3/16" seamless tubing and the suspension mounting plates are CNC machined to match the original hole patterns exactly. It will accept both stealth type and the old 6-gear trannys. During the build, the chassis is attached to a jig to ensure the suspension plates are aligned as perfectly as possible.

For this particular chassis, I TIG welded most of it. There is one additional plate to the rear under where the driver's butt would be that was brazed, and several of my other chassis are all brazed. Both welding methods have their own specific benefits, and I've learned that the best weld joints often use a little of both.

Enjoy!

Looks cool 8)

Please to those who comment, don't turn this into a for sale thread- if you feel the need you should PM him as he is not approved yet and it is frowned upon. All it will do is get this thread removed

Haha I didn't even see that, just the low post count. Probably got in due to being a long time member.

Still, I'd recommend another post in the proper forum for any sales talk, and this one can stay technical 8) that way everyone can see

over the years, while cleaning house, we delete threads that are started with dead ebay links. threads are moved off the boards for one reason or another and deleted at some point. when that happens, anyone that posted in those threads will lose however many posts from their post count.

there's no easy way to go back and find out when he aquired bst access here on the board. it wasn't recent though, so i'm gonna just go with him just being an older member that had a lot of posts in threads that went bye bye. it's a lot of posts to be short but it could've happened.

2011 isn't long enough ago to have been "grandfathered in" though.

working that metal sheet must be a lot easier when the sides are squared up. Making all kinds of weird shapes didnt work too well for me with the alloy build.

I dont see any kind of mounting points put in yet. whats your plan for that?

With a little tweak here and an adjustment there, looks like it could be a Sprintcar.

Thanks everyone!

Just to clear things up, I'm not offering this for sale here. I had applied for BST access a few months ago, but never received a reply. I may try posting there to see if I was silently approved.

I've been a member for a long time, but not very talkative. Mostly just perusing the many beautiful builds, and there are alot of them here.

The body doesn't have any mounts yet, and I probably won't do that myself. There are several options to choose, like adding small plates for screws, velcro, or even poking some very small holes and using some small solid wire twisted up. The small wire option would be the least obtrusive, but the most tedious too.

Mounting holes are in drilled to fit the RC10 servo mounts and a standard servo, and there are holes for the front battery cup. It's gonna take some creativity and small electronics to fit everything in as-is, but an additional mounting plate could be added pretty easily using the rear shock tower mounting holes. I have a fiberglass plate mounted there vertically, but a little aluminum shelf could also be made to fit and hold something right above the battery.

This is a pretty bare version that could be a great start for another builder to add their own stuff to, so it could turn into a sprint car if someone else wants to work on it some more. That's one reason I am leaving the chassis uncoated.

A shapeways steering would look nice in this buggy.
