Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Hello all,
I have several brushed motor questions, so I'll just put them all in one thread.
First, I have an adjustable timing motor with the endbell removed and no markings. How do I reset it to 0 degrees timing? What will happen if I accidentially put the endbell on flipped 180 degrees? And how do I count the wires to find out how many turns it is? There's no label.
The Trinity Chameleon and the Peak Dynasty 19 turn motors appear to have some comm wear. Do they look like they're due for a comm cut?
Thanks!

Re: Brushed motor questions
To find 0 degrees, look at the magnets. Dead center between the two is an imaginary line, that's 0. Line up the screws with that. (A sharpie works).
If you put it on backwards the motor will run in reverse
(if you think about it the only difference is the + and - marks)
If you put it on backwards the motor will run in reverse

Re: Brushed motor questions
So if I put the endbell on backwards and switch the motor wires, it will be the same as if I did nothing?

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Thanks for the replies. I have another question.
I'm trying to set up my Novak 410-hpc with a Futaba FP-T2ncs stick radio. I have it connected to a motor with a schottky diode.
When I push the throttle stick forwards, it makes a noise.
When I push the throttle stick backwards, the motor rotates in the correct direction.
Normally I would know what to do, but I've never dealt with a non-reversible ESC before. Should I reverse the throttle trim on the radio, switch the motor wires, or what?
Thanks!

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Here is the manual for those esc...

First off I would flip your servo reverse switch on the radio. That will get the forward back to the correct side if the stick. Since the motor direction is correct there is no need to flip the wires. Then make your adjustments for neutral and high speed per the manual linked above. The high frequency esc's will make a sound through the motor at low speeds.

Thanks.
It may be worth noting, my radio doesn't actually have a reverse switch. I need to either turn around the stick or switch two wires on the pot.

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Yup either will work just fine!
Ahhhh....the good ole days!

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Thank you for all your help, I have another question.
Does telling the ESC to reverse harm anything?
Also, should I expect any compatibility issues between the old Novak and a modern coreless digital servo?

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Not sure what you mean about reversing the esc- using reverse will hurt the motor brushes but not the speed control. If your referring to reversing the transmitter to make the speed control operate properly then no, that's how it's supposed to go.
Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
I mean pushing the stick backwards and telling the ESC to go backwards. I figured it's probably okay, I just thought I should ask.

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Doesn't matter at all. Where it would matter is with a reversing esc, because you could be operating it off the reverse for forward and that would be inefficient and might even have a delay depending on the esc. With a forward only your just fine.
Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
I'm sorry I didn't do a good job explaining this.
Does anything happen if you tell a correctly set up non-reverse ESC to go backwards?

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
No, if it's a reversing speed control and you tell it to go backwards that's what it should be doing
I feel like I'm missing something in your explanation

Re: Brushed motor and vintage ESC questions
Are you asking what happens if you have a reversing esc, and your using the reverse side of the speed control for forward? If so, you usually will lack power handling and sometimes there will be a delay depending on the esc.
