whats radio for rc10 classic build and what upgrades?

Post by matt98svt »

Hi all,
I have been out of RC since oh the late 1980s and just received a rc10 classic as a gift. I never had one back in the day (got a clodbuster for xmas instead) but I always wanted one. I know nothing of current RC requirement so was hoping someone could advise me on what would be a good pistol grip radio and servos and also battery pack for my rc10 classic. As well, are there any must have upgrades for the rc10 classic like wheel bearings I should be looking at installing when I do the build? Im excited to be getting back into it a bit and just plan to run my car pretty easy in an empty lot beside the house, nothing too rough. Thanks for any input.

Hi, Welcome to the madness... below are the upgrades for our much loved RC, as for the radio and servo, it really depends on your budget if money is not an issue you can get the high end from Futaba/KO/Sanwa (4pksr/EX-1/M12), but the radio of today normally doesn't come with the servo and you need to get it separately. good buy are from again Futaba/KO/Sanwa/savox etc.. there are a lot to choose from, just get the coreless metal gear servos around 125Mg oz-in @ 6V minum speed .10 sec/60* (savox 1251MG).there are lot to choose from you just need to check the specs.

if your on a budget, you can always get the lower end radio that can do the job. or can always convert your AM/FM radio to 2.4Ghz tech....

For the upgrades, Ball bearing steering is a must and also the Ball bearing kit, you can either get it from Avid, Boca, acer (etc, even on ebay) for the complete set.

for the ESC and battery, you can get it dirt cheap at Hobbyking.com, they are roar approved ( not all), but Hobbywing ( ESC) is a value for your money, just don't forget to buy it witht he program card. you can get it either the sensored or sensorless Brushless motor and ESC. the High end is their zerun (sensored)series and the low end is the ezrun(sensoreless) series.
both are bang for the buck, there is also the branded like Novak, tekin etc....

Surely guys on here will chime on in to give you advise on which to choose from.

Turnigy Shorty lipo packs, why choose shorty over stick packs? well its a matter of tuning, you can shift the weight further front/back to change weight bias.

For motor, you may choose from 17.5 spec class down to 8.5T brushless motor (540).

Radio you can bash and race with if you want to is the futaba 3pl,servo i use the hobbico cs140 its relatively cheap but digital and I have had good luck club racing with them. Esc traditional us brands like Novak are actually cheaper than the good hobbywing stuff and are plenty good enough for racing also like club or edge or gtb2,the really cheap hobbyking or hobbywing setups are ok for bashin.. Batteries the turnigy nanotech listed previously are good especially for the money..Bearings would be the first upgrade for the kit...

1 tip on the batteries some of the packs with huge milliamp capacity may not fit in the rc10 even though the bulkhead has been revised.. I reccomend measuring it an checking the pack specs... Also you will need to research up on lipo batteries an get a lipo specific charger mate,if used properly they are safe as but if not they can cause trouble but still the only way to go...

Hi,
thank you all for taking the time to post the detailed information..very helpful! I am undecided if i should stick with a vintage style motor and speed controller, which is what i know, or do more research into these new brushless motors and weigh the pros and cons. its seems these new lipo battery packs will still be the way to go though. Im gonna keep looking at others builds on here and get some ideas but im off and running

I have a very inexpensive setup in my Classic. I'm running a Tamiya TEU-104BK speed control ($25), Tamiya Sport Tuned motor ($25), Flysky GT3B radio ($40) and a Savox SV0220MG servo ($30). For battery packs, I pickup up a few Value Hobby 25c/5000 may 2s lips ($19 each). While the car won't win any speed races, it is a lot of fun for a small amount of money.

If you want a little more speed (or want to go brushless), look into the Hobbywing Just Stock Club Spec ESC ($60) and a 17.5 or 13.5 motor. SMC Racing has the motors for about $60.
RC10 Short Arm | Novak Tempest ESC | Tamiya Torque Tuned 25T | Savox 1258 | Stealth Trans w/ Exotek Slipper Eliminator (geared 24/81)
RC10B3 | HW Just Stock Club Spec | Reedy 13.5 | Savox 1258

if you look around, can find a Speed Passion ESc and 17.5 motor combo for $99 shipped. (Esc is good for down to a 4.5t motor. ) and comes with a program box to get you going.

I am using older Team associated 2.4ghz radios with an older modifiied Digital FM radio they had. Can grab a Radio set fo around 30-40 bucks.

What are you using for spacer for the shorty battery?

98 SVT? I used to have a silver 1998 Contour SVT, would be a small world if you had one.

Follow the advice of these guys. I was in a similar boat when I rediscovered RC a few years back and wasted time dealing with am radios and interference, brushed motors and ancient speed controllers, and nicd batteries.

Enjoy the vintage RC10 feel even more by putting in robust electronics that make effortless brushless power fueled by powerful, long-lasting lipo batteries (practically until you get sick of driving the thing), all controlled by glitch-free 2.4ghz radios.
