Just scored a DS

Post by bigmd »

Hey guys a late nite eBay search netted me a complete DS. Aside from a cleaning it's gonna need tires. I really would like to stay with the factory wheels and not do the front end conversion. I've found front wheels on eBay but no rears and definitely have not been able to find tires. Do the custom works tires fit the stock rims? I read some posts that they did but they were old posts. Thanks in advance

So you want to go with the rubber tires, and not the foams correct? They pop up on ebay frequently. a little patience and I'm sure you can find a decent set for a decent price. If you're going with rubber tires, do you want chrome or black wheels?

here's black rears if thats what you're after- http://www.ebay.com/itm/281301330606?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I bought a pair from that seller for my DS.

Hey man thanks for responding. Yeah looking for rubber tires . But as I understand the rims are a weird size . No other options.
Except the Associated tires?

mostly correct on that. I was thinking someone had an alternative to these tires that were more of an offroad type tire but can't find the link. Might've been traxxas merv type tires.

Like stated above they show up off and on. Sometimes for stupid money and sometimes affordable. You're not the only one lookin for them though so you gotta be quick

Thanks Todd . This DS looks to be in good shape except the tires and beat up chassis. I'll know more when it gets here. Looks like I'll do the front end conversion on it. Gonna get torn down anyway for powder coat and rebuild. Don't feel like waiting for parts to show up on eBay

there are some good examples of ds builds on here with hex wheel conversions. check out LoboNYC's ds threads for some cool wheel choices and alternate body sets. There are a few more but I think LoboNYC is the most addicted to DS on here as of lately :P . Keep on the lookout for the originals and they'll show up eventually for you since you can always change back to original if thats what you are after. Don't forget to post pix when you can...we be likin pix here

HAHAHA Thanks Todd, I thought i was hiding my addiction well. I guess 15 DS's may be a sign of a problem. I thought one would be cool to have (Thanks Romulus22 for making that possible), then i dont know what happen....i got a second DS, a"car for parts" roller as backup and ended up rebuilding it entirely into what it is today...."PINKY".

The addiction continued and now im 15 DS's in the hole. Im gathering parts for another DS build thanks to Sandkil. He was extremely kind enough to ship me some front and rear DS suspension arms. I just scored a nice DS chassis/nose plate/tubes off ebay specifically for those arms.

bigmd, although the original DS tires look great, especially with a muscle car body, eventually you will want your choice of rubber/wheels if you intend to run her. That's what the front end conversion will allow. ie, PINKY is setup with the HPI pirelli rally tires.

Sandkil....if you are reading this...you planted a DS seed by mailing them arms....the seeds have begun to sprout  Just scored a nice chassis set for the arms and im gathering the smaller parts for build project....

Lobo your builds got me goin on this to begin with and then I read just about every thread in the on road section. Was gonna build it piece by piece but then found a roller on eBay that looked to jus need a cleaning. Aside from it needing tires it also needs rear sway bar and 1 chassis support tube . I like the factory tire look. And since I own a mustang gt I will most definitely do a muscle car body.

I'm glad I was some sort of inspiration  Working on a roller is easier than piece by piece, however sometimes for me it is more enjoyable if you go piece by piece. PINKY was completed from an assortment of GT and NDS parts.

Original tires that are is great shape are hard to come by but they do pop up. Ive gotten a few good ones (not worn or cut) but unfortunately they always have some dry-rot as they are not as flexible as fresh tires. Rear sway bars are common but the nose tubes may take some searching.

Do you intend on running it?

Im looking fwd to checking out your build. As Todd mentioned, we be liking pictures here, lololol

Yeah definitely. Intend to run it . Probably just street in front of house. I did find a rear set that I bought on eBay. If someone can tell me how to transfer pics from iPhone to iPad than I can post pics. It was so much easier with my laptop.

SWEET!!!! you will have fun with it. I was having crazy fun with the mustang ds.... even when my daughter hit the curb headon, lol.

Congrats on the rear tire find.

As far as pics, you can create a photobucket account if you don't have one already and upload them from the phone to there. Then you can grab the code and post here on the forum.
