12mm hex wheels with shallow off-set?

Post by dldiaz »

I need a set of wheels for a model I am building - just mixing some Tamiya parts,
it is a Tamiya TL-01 chassis with the Ford Racing 4x4 body from a TA-01 kit.

The wheels need to be 12mm hex, with the shallowest possible off-set
(i.e. I need the wheels to stick out away from the body, for clearance).

The overall width is not so important, but I want 2.2" diameter.

The closest thing I know of would be 4x4 buggy front wheels, used at all four corners,
However, I cannot seem to find numbers for the off-set of various 4x4 fronts...

I could even use 2wd buggy fronts with 12mm hex, if the off-set were correct.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

2.2" narrow crawler wheels are perfect for that, at least for your rears. They're usually between 37 and 42 mm wide and fit standard 2.2" buggy rear tires. The downside is most are beadlocks and therefore heavier, but some of them look beautiful on a buggy. I'm using examples of those wheels on Barney and used them on my buddy's AYK Buffalo that I restored as that car NEEDS negative offset or the tires/wheels rub the chassis plate/shocks.

These also might work, Proline Desperado wheels, which come in 2.2" and look like they have mostly negative offset:

Lastly, Hobao Hyper Mini ST wheels might work, they have negative offset but I don't know if it's enough:

To move the wheels out as far as possible in 2.2", look for wheels designed for Traxxas Stampede/Rustler. They go out pretty far, but most are 2.2" wide as well.

RPM make narrower rock crawler versions of their Clawz and Revolver wheels, the dimensions are on their website http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/products/wheels/Crawler/index.htm

Those are way positive offset, typical of most wheels these days; not negative. Almost no typical dish-style wheels will work because they're all positive offset.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will be researching a few of these!

As far as the Schumacher wheels - Is it possible that by "shallow 12mm hex" you are referring to the depth of the actual hex adapter (which looks pretty shallow), as opposed to the offset of the wheel itself???

Perhaps I should have started this off looking for "negative" offset wheels,
instead of "shallow"...

Thanks again!

I ended up choosing the RPM Chrome Revolver Rock Crawler wheels in the "wide wheelbase" offset. They work great!

I'll post some pics in a new thread:
