Paint removal from plastic?

Post by rcgerber »

Does anyone have a good way to remove paint from plastic? I bought a rear bulkhead off ebay and didn't notice it was painted. To be honest I have not idea even what type of paint it is. It's glossy and looks thick so I think that rules out the polycarbonate paint; it could be nail polish for all I know. Motor spray seems to slowly remove it buy spraying some on a paper towel and rubbing on it, it might come off quicker if I were to soak a rag then lay it on the bulkhead for a minute or so. I don't want to damage the plastic so I thought I would check here before getting to crazy with it.

Oh by the I love lurking here some of the cars on here are simply amazing.

Dot 3 brake fluid. Let it soak for a day or so. I've stripped loads of Tamiyas this way.

I´ve had Kyosho Burns plastic parts soaked in brake fluid for 14 days - it took the paint and did no harm to the plastic. I´ve learned that mild heat quickens the process.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll give the Dot 3 a try.

Using your wife's toothbrush to work it in also speeds things up.
