i know that. but the round as a whole is alot different. .308/7.62x51 can really "reach out and touch someone".
it's a full sized rifle round, whereas 7.62x39 is a intermediate round, sometimes reffered to as a sub-gun round or assault round.

you also have 30 ought and 7.62x54r, similar diameter but a whole lot more power/energy not to mention mass as the bullets themselves are longer.
at the end of the day, .30 caliber is the winner by far.

then there's the 'lil guys .223/5.56x45 and 5.45x39, glorified .22's. and a waste of time.

Happy turkeyday, in the spirit of holidays and guns, I was thinking of gun safes. Are there name brands that you guys have experience with and would recommend? Is Fort Knox good, they seem to be American made and higher priced with good quality from what I read?

I need a bedside safe and a large safe (fireproof for a while and waterproof would be nice) for storing long guns at some point, and maybe a few family heirlooms.

What do you use something like that on? With the 30 round clip? Not trying to be a smart ass, I'm just curious.

i'll field that question....

first off, it's a magazine not a clip. the media is driving me crazy with that one.
the other term that's being misused is "assault rifle", an assault rifle is a selectfire, capable of full auto, rifle that shoots a mid range bullet. so the military version of the ar is an assault rifle, but the ar15 is not. same goes for ak's, the commercial ak's on the market are not assault rifles.

anyhoo, i owned an ar15 (sold it a few months ago, just not a fan of that rifle at all). i used it for a couple of activities.
1. target shooting; paper targets, bowling pins, metal spinners and gongs. tons of fun.
2. tactical training; a good friend is an instructor at a "blackwater" type company. we did all sorts of fun stuff, shooting on the move, in snow, night, fog, in structures, from vehicles. those classes really gave me a good glimpse of what our forces are taught and what they have to accomplish under strained cirrcumstances...to say the least. i finished at the top of my class (with an ak74 even, similar to an ak47 just a smaller caliber)

i consider both activities to be sports. i've taken classes at the NSSF (national shooting sports federation), they get into hunting (gun/bow/trapping), conservation and sustainable living.

having 10 or 30 rounds makes no difference to me. i can reload faster then most people can unzip their pants.

the 1994 assault weapons ban did nothing to prevent me from buying any of the rifles i own. ak's ar's sks's, didn't matter at all.
all the rifles i bought were withing the legal limits. no new imports were allowed after 94 either.

there's the 922r law, where foreign guns need to have a certain amount of us made parts if they have a certain # of "evil features" like; pistol grip, detachable magzines, bayonet lugs, flash hider/muzzle breaks.

the only thing that affected ar15's was they removed the bayonet lugs from all commercial rifles and the barrel length cant be under 16 inches.

back to the 30 roung mags, 20 and 30 rounds mags are what the rifle was designed for. the 10 rounders (often not as well made as the 20's and 30's) were made for hunters and areas that have limits on mag capacity. in california they cannot have detactable mags so a 10 rounder is sort of welded to the reciever and the rifle needs to be partially disassembled to reload it.

When you shoot a gong does it just sound like any other piece of metal getting hit by a bullet or does it make some kind of awesome gong sound? Or maybe somewhere in between?

Obviously in the minority here - but I don't own a gun and never have, never will. I don't even know anyone who DOES own a gun, for home defense or hunting.

I know my kids were a bit freaked out when they saw a guy with one inside his coat casually strolling through a shopping mall when we were in Myrtle Beach this year. Up here, that guy would get arrested for having a concealed weapon.

I'm not saying its bad or good either way - just different than what I'm used to here.

i hear ya. i wasn't raised with "gun culture", it's something i got into in my late 20's with some friends. it steamrolled into a hobby from there. i haven't been shooting since my son was born in 09. i've sold alot of my collection and am down to 2 sks, a ruger 10/22 and my grandpa's 12gauge side by side shotgun. shooting has gotten expensive, rc is cheaper....kinda. lol

I target shoot the most, I enjoy seeing how good a grouping I can get! It has a calming effect on me, may be the breathing control but I feel great after a few hours at the range! I also love the history of guns and appreciate the uses in peace and war! If only some of my WWII issued guns could talk, the stories they could tell! Happy I'm not speaking German right now (even though I'm of German descent), would not want to be a Nazi!

... and even those estimates are low. I have an older friend who grew up under the Soviet communist party and there are many estimates that are closer to 50 milion. Most were put in work camps in Siberia. That is just a small part of that story as well.
