Things have been progessing slowly on this project. I have been waiting about a month for my JC racing wheels and still nothing yet. I contacted them and they have no idea where they are. We are trying to work it out and I have been happy with their response so far
This has been the only hold up on this project so far. I have yet to paint the body but that shouldn't be such a big deal. I was glad to hear that water based paints hit the market a few years back. I am going to have to try them on this body. Water based beats thinning the lacquer paints and cleaning the gun with thinner all the time!!
A few improvements have been made since my last post. I found better shock cap seals in the form of 1x10 mm o-rings. They stay put and seal up tight, pretty much like the top load shocks use. I have also modified a set of output gears to be used as idle gears. This should make for a bullet proof 6 gear trans. I have to credit the brain trust on this site for that great idea. I never even knew the out puts were the same tooth count as the idle gears until I saw them in place on somebody's thread here. Thanks!

I have given up on the idea of making a tribute to my old car at the moment. I am just letting it take shape on it's own, driven by the price of parts and tire availability. Since 2.2 are the norms now, I ordered JC racing wheels and the Viper body was a killer price so I bought that instead of the Chenowth.
Now with the all steel gearbox I may throw a set of MIP CVDs at it and have a brushless ready RC10.
Odds are I will probably use the car for a few runs and then Ebay it as I just bought an 1/8th scale 4x4 buggy and may actually start racing that.
As for RC-10s I think I enjoy building them more than driving them. The fondest memories I have of my first RC-10 were of assembly, strange huh??

First thing I did was install the steel gears when I got home from work. They fit perfectly. Here are the pics:

The diff spins pretty smooth and no more plastic gears to worry about. Do you guys use any sort of lube in the diff or should I use anything with all steel gears?

My wheels finally arrived from JC Racing UK. They had to send me a second set as the first set never arrived. It was a month and a half long wait. I have to admit it was worth the wait, they are pretty nice. I tested the car out and everything works great so far. I was also able to get the body masked and painted this week. I'm very much just an amateur painter. I managed to use up the leftover paints I had kicking around and came up with something decent.

Well, it's finished but far from what it was originally supposed to be. I'm the poster child for project creep I think. Anyhow, here it is:





The body didn't look at that exciting until I mounted it and placed the decals. It really looks a lot better than it did when I pulled the mask off. Currently I have the car listed on Ebay, this project went long and now I need to make room for the 1/8 scale buggy I am working on. I am really excited about getting into 1/8 scale racing at the local track.

As far as RC10s go, I think I have become just the opposite of a chop shop. I really enjoy taking in wrecks and making them great again. It's like Ying and Yang, I'm really trying to balance out the RC Waffle LOL

I think If I ever throw a brush-less setup in an RC10, probably with a stealth. I could be convinced to keep it. I'm not a really good driver but I love speed!

Thanks guys, I really was let down with the colors I put together it was a "lets see what I have left on the shelf" paint job. I was thinking I should have inversed the blue and green but I am pleased with the end result. I really would like to keep it but I need to finish my 1/8 scale and get a couple races in before the season ends

I was doing a little user account maint., and ran across this thread I started last year. Looking back over this project, I want to kick myself for dying those nice white parts black. I'm sure there's a few guys who really wanted to say something. I've come across a lot of dyed parts in the last year and had to dye a bunch black just to make them presentable.
On the other hand, I still have the urge to build a tribute to my first RC10 and I'm dissappointed this one strayed.
I'm starting a new one from scratch. I'll be looking for any parts dyed any shade of red up to and including burgundy and a chassis that may already be drilled. I'm not in this to waste nice clean white parts.
I'm posting to the wanted section for any parts that match the above description.

I am a newer member. I just read this thread for the first time. Thats the first thing I thought. dyeing the parts? You must still be rebuilding them to think that. I seen that you sold that buggy. I viewed your other irtems and seen the 6 gear that you have for sale. Pretty cool. I also seen that you are in Rochester. I'm actually from Buffalo and have tons of RC-10 stuff too.

OK, I ended up finding a chassis that was a dead ringer for my old car, and I gave a half hearted effort into finding the Texaco decals but came up short. I put this together mainly as a rebuild to sell but I think it's a close replication of the car I originally set out to remake:





I didn't bother buying a repro body as I think I have lost interest in a full redo, and I dyed all the parts black. I ended up putting this body on it and posted it up on Ebay:



I really don't have much interest in reproducing the old girl 100% anymore so I think this will put this thread to rest. This build was close enough to seal the deal for me. Thanks for watching!
