Rc Car Action Magazine Complete 1980s Collection Picture
I just finished my RC Car Action 1980s collection. Here is a picture of them all together. Even though it is only 4 issues, 1986 took awhile (in the photo each row is a year: 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989). Well, now on to Radio Control Model Cars, I have about 10 issues, so it is going to take awhile

So 80's too

I find that when I look at old magazines, I end up looking at the ads more than the editorial.

Me too! I have a box full of old mags and when you look closer at the old adds you see all kinds of cool stuff that you missed way back when.lpddpd wrote:I find that when I look at old magazines, I end up looking at the ads more than the editorial.
RCCA were on top of their game back then.

Yes, awhile back someone posted links to the RC Car Action archive. They have all the issues, but NO ads. They lose so much without ads. That's why I collect the actual magazines. 1988-1989 were great years for radio control cars. The magazines are hundreds of pages, lots of articles and content - you can tell it was the glory days.

I'm so jealous, I only have two vintage mags to look at! One is tattered from continuous use!
You would think that after so many years I would have a pile, but sadly I gave all of them away when I moved back to Canada from Jamaica in 99! Oh well, one day I will find a stash!..... I hope!
I love looking at the scans but it's just not the same as a magazine! Plus you get all the cool adds that are missing in the scans!

Really cool, out of curiosity, which year and issues did they do the "project rc10" work? As I recall they reversed the front suspension arms and cut them quite a bit, there was a lot of time spent on the 6 gear trans and filing gears, and some other tweaks. I remember following all that and doing it to my car back in the day!

Re: Rc Car Action Magazine Complete 1980s Collection Picture
I recently saved all my old RCCA mags from my parents house, brought them to my place, and my wife accused me of being a hoarder. I said no, I'm a collector. I'm so glad I never threw them out, it's a lot of fun looking at them and I agree, the ads are fun to look at again. I remember looking at those ads and dreaming of the kind of cars I wanted. Most of mine are in pretty rough shape from looking at them so much.

Re: Rc Car Action Magazine Complete 1980s Collection Picture
A few of the magazines are my originals. I had a subscription for a year (1988).
There are lots of original RC-10 articles throughout the 80s. 1988 has a three part RC10 series, then in 1989 they focus on several RC10 transmissions/belt drives. July 1989 has the RC10 Torpedo article which is a project RC10 type article. You can tell the RC10 was popular because it dominates the focus of the magazines.
In 1989 they rolled out a Maxxum three-part article, but they did one, then there was a postponement until the second one, and it seems like the Maxxum had not sold well and they never finished the series.
My favorite is probable the Sly Fox article. It describes some beneficial hop-ups for the Fox (to make it competitive with the RC-10

yeah, i was lucky to subscribe in the heyday, 1987-1992(I think?) so I rounded up all my issues a couple years ago from the parents attic and I keep 'em stacked in the basement.

Re: Rc Car Action Magazine Complete 1980s Collection Picture
I've been going through my mag collection, got into RC just a tiny bit late unfortunately, late 89-90-ish. I've thought of getting all the 80's RCCAs, but it seems they average 20 bucks an issue, can't swing that right now. All I know is, the older the mag the more I love it! Ads especially. I have a few oddball mags, the 1st few issues of 'RC Super Speed', Competition Plus, some old Tower cats, etc. (I never ever throw out a magazine or good catalogue.) Friggin' kills me when I see old ads where they were blowing out Turbo Scorpions for $88 and such. Back in the day, what got me into all this insanity (After my Tyco Turbo Hopper) was the 2 Kyosho Turbo Rockies I snagged from Tower, also a Kyosho FA series motorcycle, for $49 each: So, at least I did not snooze entirely!
