The journey to 200mph...

Post by jon burrows »

lazy day today, doesn't come along very often. was browsing the team associated website looking for upgrades for my buggy that seems to be collecting dust again  (nor do i know why i was looking there with all the info on the forum). anyway, i saw this sick looking orange team associated car with the words "the road to 200". Well W.O.W.!!! 200mph! by none other, of course, Team Associated 8) . Check it out for yourselves at http://www.teamassociated.com/road_to_200/ . Have any of my fellow ae enthusiasts kept up with this? 176 mph so far. almost there ae !!!!!

I saw this a few months back and it got me thinking about my own quest to conquer 50 mph with the rc10. I'm sure I am there, just haven't had a chance to strap the gps on the car.

What model GPS do you use RC104ever?

I have been toying with the idea of trying to get an idea on the speed of a few of my rc's.

I also saw this a few months back, Just a matter of time and they should get it.

Just using a garmin, I tape it to the chassis standing up without a shell. I'm sure if I could tape it to the belly securely with a shell I could clear 50 but I haven't tried yet. Might try today :)

Ok, thanks. I have a few to choose from at work. Most have the speed tracking function correct?

I was able to strap my garmin GPS to the battery and put the body on and hit 38.8 MPH.

My friend and I strapped a Garmin into an RC10L. We ran a Speedworks 12T motor on an 8 cell nimh battery and hit 62 mph. Brushless would be so much easier to go faster but the car is a handful at that speed without a high down force body. We had a stock car body. They slide on their roof really well!

I remember around 1991 my cousins and I took my 10L to a parking lot (rough as hell) with 10 cells and a "Black Magic" (I think). It was night time and cold as hell, but we had to have hit 60 which was pretty good for back then. No video (for us) or GPS back then.

I know going fast is a major curiosity for some, but I'm just not into it at all anymore as an average hobbyist. If I had the resources and desire to put together a rig like above that would be a different story I'm sure.

If you want to go fast and still maintain control on a budget, get a Losi Slider 1/10 and go nuts on brushless and lipo. They are very controllable at high speeds. I've never GPSd mine, but I'm quite sure I've hit 65+ with control. A very fun car all around for the price.

It was though hitting 60 mph but not for the reasons that many think it would be. If you throw enough power at anything it'll go fast. Keeping it down is a matter of aerodynamics. The biggest problem was finding a location that was both smooth enough and long enough to do it. We went to a Kroger parking lot at night a few times since it had the size and we found a street that was smooth enough. A small car gets out of accurate visual distance pretty quickly at high speed and there is no turning at that speed. It's a straight line run that's over in a few seconds. It was neat to see how fast we could go but in the end I have more fun with cars at well less than half that speed. This is why I feel the Traxxas XO-1, as much as a marvel of technology as it is, is completely worthless. It's big first of all. Hitting 100 mph requires a good location that most people don't have and from the videos I've seen on Youtube of it running, common sense isn't that common. The thrill is also over with very quickly. How many times you can do that before you realize that the $1000 you spent on it could have been spent somewhere where the fun is longer lasting?

I think Associated is at least doing things in the only reasonable way they can. They test at airfields and drag strips not on subdivision streets. They have a purpose built car, take precautions, and even then the driver has to be on top of a tower to see far enough. I think it's a neat goal to hit but I'm glad it's not the average Joe trying to do it in front of his house with a kit he bought at the local hobby shop.

I've been following that car quite closely- theoretically very achievable with the power setup. He could pickup quite a few extra mph by simply streamlining around joins and profiling the fin and tail boom and smoothing the front splitter. The streamlined recumbent bike record is over 80mph and majority of drag is from the very small wheel/tyre opening. I'm about to do something similar with a traxxas x0-1 but extend the chassis and run a stretched body initially then make custom streamlined shell. Once I've sorted the aero, and my speed driving skill I'll probably upgrade to an MGM esc and genuine neu motor or similar.

I raced at coburg( Melbourne) velodrome in the 90 's under lights!!! they still race now- myself and 2 buds had bolink sports with 12 triples. They had a time trial session and it got 81kph, but it was a tight track and really cold so was a handful to control. We did a timed flat road run and geared it up and pulled 95kph. It was pretty hit and miss with that car as even with a massive wing fitted to the back it had the tendency to lift up. 6-8 ft. Flights weren't uncommon.

I've said it once and I'll say it a hundred more times. Losi Slider could easily hit 100 mph under control with the right equipment... 200...,OK maybe not. Here's a fun vid. :D

They have a class at my local track that race 1/18 sliders and go karts. There's a speed event in the uk that the sr11 is running at. Apparently free entry to all traxxas xo-1 apparently.
