The Mummy Lives...

Post by Zedmaster »

OK, the mummy is really just kind of yawning and stirring so far. A couple weeks ago I took my old RC10 Team Car out of its undisturbed tomb in the basement (a cardboard box...) and decided to bring it back to life. Here's what's been done to 'er so far:
  • Straightened the tub
    Cleaned parts
    Oiled the shocks
Stripped and repainted the original body and wing (I'm too ashamed to even show the original paintjob I did when I was 16!)
Discovered my original NiCads and ESC were fried
Dyed all the white nylon parts dark blue w/ RIT (I know white's classic, but I always wanted to get rid of the white parts, just never knew about RIT until now!)
Here's what I'm gonna do once the packages arrive from Tower and JCRacing1989

  • Put on some yellow 5-spoke JCracing wheels
Put in a Durtrax Streak ESC
Clean up my 14T Reedy Sonic L and run it
Put in some Venom 3000 mAH 6 cells
    Clean and relube the Stealth
Cobble together a few reasonably appropriate decals...

I'd love to hear anyone's suggestions on this car. My goal is basically to make it good enough to at least have fun competing in the open 2WD and open 2WD buggy classes at the local indoor clay track. My major limitation is money. Just the wheels, batteries, charger, ESC, and paint have basically eaten up most of my discretionary funds for the foreseeable future, so I've gotta keep any mods to DIY and little odds and ends for now...

I think she's fast enough as is, but handling could be improved... Any suggestions on cheap mods to the steering would be most appreciated...

Here's some pics. The first is where she's at now, the second is when I dug 'er out of the box...

One of our esteemed members has started reproducing his world famous steering bellcrank kits. You can inquire about purchasing one in this thread or contacting Daryl directly. Hopefully he will still have some for sale.

OK, I think this build is nearly done for the time being. That way I can devote more of my time to losing at the indoor clay track! Got some cool new RPM stuff and a new viper body for Hanukkah, and I'm pretty pleased so far. Just waiting for my Houge steering kit in the mail, and I need to figure out where to score that little plastic cover for the spur and pinion gears...

Here's the final score (for now):

Started with:

  • Long dead Team Car (from my teen years)
A Reedy 14T Sonic L that I'd barely used before the car was mothballed
A cracked to hell viper body and wing
Work I did:
  • Relubed Stealth/Rebuilt Diff
Cut the nose piece as per Worlds
Made CF tranny brace, rear shock tower
    Totally overhauled the team shocks
    Straightened the chassis
Limited rear shock downtravel to avoid popping the dogbones
Rewired everything fresh (no more electrical tape!)
Parts I've added:
  • DTX Intellispeed 8T Brushed ESC
    Venom 3800 mAH 35C 2S Lipo
    SmartStop LiPo Low-Voltage Cutoff
RPM Front/Rear A-Arms (not totally needed, but love 'em on style points!)
    RPM medium-heavy two-stage shock pistons
    RPM ball cups
    RPM quick adjust shock clips
Titanium rear turnbuckles (Hangar 9 or something?)
    Better steel front turnbuckles
JC Racing 5-spoke wheels (fits the old 1/4" axle!)
Proline Scrubs in the front, Suburbs in the back
    New front axles (stock)
Captured links for the steering rod
New viper bod and wing, metallic black
    Houge steering kit (coming soon!)
I may be an absolute novice to racing, but I'm glad that the car is at least fun to drive and looks pretty cool (to me, which is the important thing really). Here are some pics of the new body and toys!
