Novak 4 ESC

Hey guys, what can you tell me about this one from Novak?

In the pictures, look for a short bit of wire that is located at the receiver and switch output area. There are two wires, both red, soldered together.

I don't think that part was a stock feature.

Also there is a capacitor or resistor where the yellow shrink wrap is, no idea why. I have not had the chance to look up the value on it yet.

What style/brand of battery connections are those? I remember seeing them years ago, I am not new to this, but I am stumped.

Thats great, I read the other posts on the Novak 4, But that explains it all.

Now to clean it up and redo most of the soldering. I was able to pick up a JRx2 from a buddy over on Clodtalk many months ago. I am just getting to it now.

Going to try and clean the whole buggy up, replace the body and wing, some new tires and wheels.

I love the Deans 4 pin connectors, they were nice and small.

I had wondered if they were Deans,I honestly had no idea though. The only thing that made me think that was the red shape and the thin indent on one end.

I missed many things over the years that I was not as into the R/C addiction. I have nothing that looks like that connection in my collection amassed over the years.

Not really sure what to do with them, But I do want to use the ESC in the rebuild of the buggy. New ends I guess.

Why not use the Dean's plugs?
The red ones are a little bit "new" for a Novak 4 but I would stick with them.

They are a very good connection, I will have to dig into this abit more, and maybe pick up the proper era style battery and plugs.

Keep the buggy as close to original.

The Deans 4 pin would be correct to use on the JRX2. The short red wires soldered together are for 4 cell use. If you use a 6 cell, they should not touch each other!

That means I had better unsolder them if I plan on using any 7.2V or my lipo batteries with it then.

Aha! I have a bag of those plugs, something like 20 different ones plus one unopened package. There are black plugs and red plugs. They both have 4 pins each but the red plugs have the fourth plug a bit offset from the other three which you can see in the pics above. The black ones are spaced evenly. Any ideas about the differences? They're small and dainty, I decided to use them on my RC18 build .

That is some good info. I guess I might as well change all my connections to a deans plug.

I have a goofy mix, as some of my first lipo's did not have the connection I needed to be able to use them in different cars and trucks.

Bought a Tamiya to traxxas connector. Molex? whatever... I have very little in the way of modern Deans plugs on anything and it is driving me nuts.

I will wait for a complete restore on a Losi or AE project to use the pictured speed control.

What does everyone here use as the main battery and ESC connection in a restoration of a buggy/truck to keep it period correct?

Molex is essentially what Associated had. The Tamiya is proprietary to them. The red Deans 4 pins had great polarity protection, were easy to wire, and didnt take up any room. I still like them better than the Ultras.

Thx Madweazl, Would you recommend the Ultras for todays electronics then? I know it is a silly question, everyone seems to be using them.

It's just that I have 3.5mm connectors on all my old brushed motors, and I swap them out once in awhile. No matter what vehicle I am using at the time.

Change them all to Deans Ultra's? Change all batts to the same? Change all the ESC's motor connections as well? Old or new, Clod or JRX2 or B4 or TC4 or SCX-10 etc etc.

I use the bullet type connectors for batteries these days and just hardwire the motor. Makes for a very clean setup and it's impossible to screw up the connector if you have trouble soldering cleanly. I would like to swap out all of the Tamiya connectors on my old stuff for the 4 pins as that is what I ran in the bad old days.
