US trip 2012

Post by Tomas Karlsson »

Hi!
Me and my brother will visit the US next year and i need to know which places you think we must visit. We will travel across the continent and end up in California. Which track and hobbyshops do you guys recommend and also non related things is must do´s? My brother likes flyfishing so info regarding that is also appreciated. We also like fullscale motorsport and cars.
I have been overseas two times before so i am pretty familiar with the tourist traps, this time i would like to explore it on a little more deeper level.

All information is helpful.

http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/
located in indianapolis, indiana. for full scale racing history the indianapolis motor speedway museum would be a nice stop.

http://corvettemuseum.com/
located in bowling green, kentuckty. head south for the national corvette museum if you have any interest in corvettes.

http://www.nps.gov/maca/index.htm
located in cave city, kentucky (not far from bowling green). if you would be interested you should also check out mammoth cave and take a cave tour.

if i think of more i will post them up. but that should cover a couple days for you.

my suggestion, Fly into JFK Airport in Long Island New York, take the air shuttle/train to Penn Station (its like 10-15 bucks and quick), and it will take you into the heart of New York City/Manhattan. TONS of stuff to do in NYC, food, sites, attractions, shows, etc etc! Plus you can take a train from penn station anywhere via Amtrak train line which will get you to your next destination.

As far as RC stuff in the NY/NYC area, there isnt much RC action out here unfortunetly... probably worst state for it in the United states. just not a huge interest.

About what time of year will you be making your trip? That might help make suggestions.

San Francisco bay area (where I live). San Francisco is a major tourist destination, and one of the best RC tracks in California is within an hour. There is even a couple of indoor Go-Cart tracks. Plus The sierra Nevada mountains are close (3-4 hours, Yosemite, tons of "touristy" stuff to do -Fishing. Napa (if you are into wine) is an awesome place, Real race cars there and in Monterey. Then you can head to SoCal. Tons of stuff there as well, amusement parks. -Jeff

I can provide fly fishing information to you as I've fished quite a bit over the US. Let me know the time frame you will be in the US and what areas of the US. PM me if you want to discuss fly fishing offline.

Hi!
Thanks for the answers.
New york is a must do, been there twice and like it, i will be guiding my brother who has never visited US before. Then we will take a rentalcar from new jersey and hit the roads across America. Did a similar trip in 2008 from NY to LA.
San Francisco is a must do and also the highway one.
I am asking you guys theese things cause i have seen it all already but need to find the real sweet spots this time, things that you cant find in the guidebooks.
We will be traveling in late august (long time left...).

Is cedar point a fun place? i have heard of the millenium force and the top thrill dragster, are they make the stomach go crazy or? We love roller coasters.

Thanks for all input.

I'd suggest the following. Yellowstone national park, Montana (not much to do other than fish, but it's a gorgeous place), check out the Lucas off-road racing series or the Traxxas TORC series. They are full size short course and off road buggies and would be a lot of fun. Or see the mobster jam world finals in las Vegas.

Cedar Point is an awesome place! Kings Island in Cincinnatti, OH is also top notch. Both have the best coasters of most any park.

Depending on what route you take heading west, Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC is something to see. The Smokey Mountain National forest is nice too.

Wich rc-tracks is must do´s in cali? Are they owned by hobbyshops? I was thinking that if it´s possible to rent race car somewhere. I was thinking to buy a kit also but will not have the time to put it together, maybe a rtr car of a good quality will do, just for a couple of weeks:)

As a non-US citizen (UK in fact) who has done the California thing - San Fran, Yosemite, Napa/Somoma, 17 mile drive, Carmel, Monterey, Big Sur, LA) I can recommend that as a superb trip to do. I went with my wife and we hired a convertible mustang. We both rate that holiday as the best we've ever had.....

If you haven't already seen the Grand Canyon then you should try to stop there for an afternoon/sunset. Yosemite is also spectacular.

Let me know when you get to SoCal and I'll show you the old AE Edinger building, my vintage R/C car collection, etc.
