Craigslist Score! Fox / Frog

Post by huminski »

My first car was a fox. Actually, my first cars were nikkos, etc, but my first REAL car was a fox. Got it for xmas in the mid 80's. I still remember sitting at the little table in the kitchen next to the refrigerator building it. I also remember it being just days old, and me overcharging the 6 cell hump pack while still in the car, which completely melted down the lower chassis and the battery. Headed to the hobby store and got another couple late xmas presents, a new chassis and a new battery, and a lesson to never charge a battery in a car. :)

Anyway, my buddy at work found this ad, for a Frog and a Fox, for $125. He took the Frog for $65 (it was mostly unbuilt, definitely never used) and I took the Fox for $60.

Here are the pics. Boxes are MINT. Both have manuals, paperwork, in-box airtronics radios, and parts. Fox even still has the full decal sheet, minus one window net decal. I could not believe it. Also in the fox box was a reciept for a repair of the Fox at a hobby store, dated 1989. :) Cool stuff.

Here they are, first the Frog. Remember, this was a $65 buy for what you see here.

Here is the Fox, paid $60 for all you see here. Needless to say, I was thrilled. Looked rough when I picked it up, but it was just dirty, you can see it cleaned up real nice. I have the original body, but it's poorly painted and in rough shape. But it exists.... Electronics are all removed in these pics since I disassembled and washed it down, but they're all there also.

And finally, hope this does not sound weird, but I was on my way to work that morning, and out of nowhere at 6:30 in the morning there was this massive rainbow in front of me. Picture does not do it justice, but it must have been a sign of a good day to come. I happened to take a couple pics while at a stop sign. You can see the sky was totally clear.... Weird....

Nice find! They say there's a pot of gold burried at the bottom of the rainbow where it meets the ground. I think for you, that must have been the reflection of the gold Fox wheels  :D

The Fox was definitely a great-looking car. I think I have most of a decal sheet from a Fox in my box-o-stickers. It doesn't look like you'd need it, but PM me if you do.

Hey Marc, if Mr. huminski declines on that sticker sheet I would definitely be interested...

I'll update you tonight, I have to take a pic of the sheet for huminsky. If I remember, the sheet has a few stickers removed but might have the missing window net sticker. I don't have a Fox or plan to own one so the sticker sheet's not doing me any good. :)

So I got a repro body, and took a deep breath and cut up the original sticker sheet that was miraculously included with this $60 gold mine. Metallic Blue Pactra paint. Wheels are SEES I think, aluminum, I had to drill the fronts to take a 5mm X 10mm flanged bearing, the rears bolted up well by just not using the 4-pin plastic wheel adapters.

Still need an upper chassis plate, the body post mount is cracked off on this one.

However, I am extremely pleased with how this one is coming along. I seem to remember the fox transmission being a bit fragile, so I'll probably just run a 27T in this one.... :)
