Worlds Car resurrected :)

Hi all

here's a project I finished a few weeks back but never got a chance to present here.

It took me like 2 and a half years to get this car and hours of negociation and deployment of all my (poor) convincing skills to get a former national champ (for what french national titles are worth )to sell his Worlds car to me.

The car was in not so bad a shape, but needeed a serious teardown as it had been cannibalized by his owner as the years went by.







A significant amount of TLC later, this is what it looks like now



I had to restore the shock towers as they were seriously delaminated... it took CA, a plastic bag, a vice, and a few hours of scrapping the CA that ran all over the place





I know, I know, it's a traxxas wing... it looks the business though. Wing wire delicately bent with a vice and a hammer



The car has a few interesting features. First, the rear of the chassis was cut for lightening/cooling purposes I think, i've seen a few cars like this before, this one has been worked very nicely and cleanly



Secondly, it has a hydradrive. Now, to be honest, I have NOT managed to set the slipper/hydra set correctly... the slipper will slip unless it's insanely tightened... Must not have the correct parts in there, but I can't figure out what's wrong, even though Maurice (cheers, dude!) kindly sent me some original installation instructions




I had initally planned to run this car in our local indoor series, hence the modern shock caps. However we use spec tires, those modern ones with high walls that blatantly stole that jconcept design. Despite all I read on this very forum, I couldn't find a way to get the ride height right, without having the front arms in a serious "v" shape, which meant the front suspension certainly wasn't working in the window initially planned. As I couldn't find a solution to that issue after tinkering with everything I could think of other than milling the steering hubs to move some plastic from the lower to the upper side, I've decided the car would then become a shelf queen.

To comfort the poor thing, I offered it a brand spanking new period 13 quad PeakPerf.

The car is now waiting for a shell painted by the very best of the best, prp... this guy is too modest, but be aware that he has some serious painting skillz and was doing all the hi-profile french pro's shells bitd (most of them not in 10th offroad )

Nice resto Paul for sure. It seems like you are quite good at getting front ride height problems. In my opinion, there can't be many things to look at: either too much spacers inside the front shocks or too short front shock shafts (they should be 0.71"). Good luck!

I'm disappointed

think about it this way. The front end was designed to be arms level at the "right" ride height, say 20mm on 2.0 or 2.1 tires. The outside diameter of the tire was 81mm (just pulled out the calipers to measure the tires on the car right now). Now I need to use fronts whose diameter is about 90mm (2.2 AND high sidewalls). If I want my same 20mm ride height, then I have to move the shock collars up to physically drop the nose 4.5mm ((90-81)/2). This means that the front suspension is not "arms level" any more, rather "v-level". If I would use super small tires I'd be in the "^-level" position to hit my target ride height

You can look at it any way you like, it doesn't have anything to do with shock shafts, internal/external spacers, or shock tower... it's just the relative height of the front axle vs. the arm that defines it all. If you take a modern car, this distance is much higher on a B4 for instance than on the rc10.

The obvious solution is to not care about it (or only care about actually ADDING inner limiters to prevent any crazy droop) and run it like that. The problem is I only race electric offroad 4 times a year, period, and I have a B4.1 that's perfectly competitive and which was fighting for the podium or the win most of last years similar series... I don't want to waste at least one perfectly good racing event tinkering with a front suspension that just won't work as designed

Yes, it's a sweet one! Don't get fooled by the body on the other thread though, that paint job can be deceiving as the car (and the cut at the back!) came from someone else, whom I think of as a much more talented engineer, although much less famous... Both of them still national winners, though!

Still feel very lucky to own this one - and I need to rebuild the other one, too

Thanks for the kind words, it's great that this car gets some attention as it was really cool to buy it from the guy who had cut it and raced it bitd

Weirdly enough: you guys can actually see the PB hotlinked pictures... Are you using the chrome add-on at all?

How about flipping the front arms in more of a Masami 91 Stealth orientation? I haven't worked out what exactly would need to happen with the other front end parts to make that work, but it sounds good in my head!
