Clodbuster Old is Old build

I started on this Clodbuster a few weeks back and have been updating a current build thread over at Clodtalk.

Basically I started with a busted truck from eBay and scratch built the chassis, links, shock mounts, upper link mounts, (lowers were bought), front bumper/Steering, steering links. Basically every alluminum part you see minus the lower link mounts, I made in my garage with my machines.

I just ordered dual brushless 5.5s for the truck so it should absolutely fly. I still have some work to do but for the most part it is done. Enojy the pics.

Gotta let us know how she runs with the 5.5 motors. Will clod tranny's hold up to that power? I've never owned one and am curious. A vid with it flying would be even better! I'd be interested in building something like this as well, although I definitely would not have the skill to make such awesome hand made pieces like you did.

According to the many folks at Clodtalk, the gears will hold up just fine. Many of the guys are running pretty hot motors in these clods with the factory gears.

One guy I beleive has had his clod up to about 31 mph with stock gears.

looks great Jake! I would add 4 strut bars from the bottom link mounts to the shock mounts, to triangulate the ends of the chassis. Unless you have both links tied to the same point on the bottom there, it's hard to see, that would make the screw pretty long. In any case, I would add some struts there somehow to make sure you don't bend the chassis horns up on an end-over.

did you use solid rod for the links or are they tubing?

The links are triangulated and attached to different points on the axles.

The links are made from solid 6061 and threaded 8-32 on both ends.

yeah, I understand the link system, I'm talking about adding some support for the frame rails from the center of the chassis out to the shock mounts.

If those link rods are threaded for a male thread, just keep an eye on them. One bend on them and the threads will break off. You might be better suited drilling and tapping the ends and using 8/32" all-thread, or long headless setscrews.

all in all, it's an awesome project! I keep kicking the idea around of picking up a clod.......

Ahh, I see what you are talking about. The chassis is pretty stiff, since the rails are solid 6061 square rod as well.

When I get the motors in the truck I will shoot some video of the truck ripping around the house.

Got the truck running, took it for a test drive and broke a couple things. Nothing big. The truck with 5.5s is super quick, pulling wheelies. This will be a fun truck to drive around the house.

Everything is being ano'd hard black right now so when the parts return I can get the final product put together. I bought a new body becuase I was not happy with the paint in the earlier picture. There is a local BMX track in town I am going to pay a visit too. The truck with 5.5s is too fast for a typical RC track. With it being top heavy, front steering only, rediculous amounts of torque/speed, I need a wide open area to drive it.

I hope to have the wife there to shoot video. Will be fun.
