In the 80's the AE 12th scale cars were winning a lot of races. Those of us in 10th scale were feeling left out. There was TRC, Bolink, Parma to name a few but I didn't like their performance.
AE announced the new 10L, but at the time only team drivers had them.
Looking at pictures of a 10L in a magazine I noticed that the front suspension arm was about the same size as the 12L. I made some measurements and some guesstimations and decided that if I couldn't buy a 10L I would make my own.
A friend of a friend knew someone that made carbon fiber stuff for the military and I had them make a sheet for me. Next came the hard part cutting it into a chassis and making the battery slots.
I bought the rear pod and suspension arms (all 12th scale) and whatever else I needed to finish my 9L.
Right out of the gate the car was performing well at the local track.
It was a joy to drive and tuning was easy. I got a lot of request to build more chassis but declined. I didn't have the time.
At one out of town race a very young AE team driver saw my 9L and demanded I tell him where I got the car. He said "You aren't supposed to have that". I told him to beat it. He wasn't very happy because until then he was winning all of the races. He also wasn't happy that I won the A-Main that day.
I finished the season at the local track with the 9LSS before the 10L was available. When AE released the 10L I retired the 9LSS

That is pretty cool and such a neat story to go with it as well. I remember Tony Neisinger was testing the Prototype RC10L and at that time the front was based on the two bolt version of the RC12 then when released it had the three bolt front end.

That is very cool, nice job on building your own preproduction car. it looks just like a early 10L would look like.

The car is real. I made up the name.
You wouldn't believe some of the cars/trucks people were building back then.
Homemade monster trucks were interesting and the oval cars were....unusual (I like oval cars and monster trucks).

It was a lot of work. I made two chassis. One with 12L parts the other with TRC parts (the TRC chassis is long gone).
If you ever want to make something out of graphite I suggest goggles,
particle mask, and a shop vac hose mounted near your work.
My dremel got a workout.
