Tread width, body width, track width

Post by Mindwarp »

Ok, so I'm a bit confused shall we?

What's the difference between track width, tread width and body width.

Body width I gather is from the outside of a fender to the outside of the opposite fender, but what are the others? I guess the basis for this question is, let's say I have a body that is 7 inches wide at the front and 7.5 inches wide at the back and I wish to buy a new chassis; how do I determine the ideal chassis size I would need?

If the question isn't clear enough, please let me know.

"Track" is the width across left & right wheels, or how far apart the right & left wheels are spaced; body width is just that; tread width would be the width across the face of a tire, I'd imagine.

That's what I thought about tread width as well, but on Tamiya's web site for example, they have a TA04S with a 6.34 inch tread width.

They must be using that number to measure from the outside of the left tire to the outside of the right tire. To me that's somewhat redundant info but I guess if one's tires are wider or narrower than the wheels they're mounted on, that number would be different than the track width.

The track width should be more or less the center to center of the tires. The overall width should be the 'tread' width, meaning the overall width from the outside edge of the tires.

Body width is what you said.

I stand corrected with my definition of "track". Thanks for clarifying, Joe.
