Kyosho Outrage: restored to life

My 12 year old Kyosho outrage has spent the last few years of it's life sitting in the closet. Recently I decided to bring it back to life.

I started with taking it completely apart and cleaning it. I then rebuilt it using all Avid bearings in the differential and for the wheels.


The silver on the rims was starting to wear off in some spots, showing it's age.
So I took the original yellow rims that came with the kit and dyed them black.


I like that mus better.
I decided to use a Proline Baja Beetle body (I like VW Beetles).
I then rebuilt the shocks (new o-rings) and installed red latex balloons over the springs. I tossed out the old mechanical speed control and threw in an ESC that I picked up on Ebay for $20.
As for the motor, I kept the old Kyosho Endoplasma (17 turn brusshed).
Painted it with Pactra Outlaw Black, Metallic Red and Indy Silver.

I think the next step is to replace the plastic connecting rods that it uses for the front and rear and the steering tie rods with adjustable turnbuckles so that I will have some control to adjust the alignment of the wheels. I have toyed around with the idea of fabricating my own aluminum chassis for it as well, but I think I will wait and see how well the stock one holds up. I have had them break in the past, but the one that is on it now has been reinforced in the rear using sheet metal. It seems to have held up pretty well.
I do have some red wheel nuts and a red heatsink on order. Just for that extra "bling" really.

I have an unused chassis you can have at sending cost should you break this one.
No need to make your own though: any ultima chassis will work and with a little handiness you can get the purple anodised one of tower hobbies ST-15 to work for sure.
The proline body is beautifully finished and the paintscheme very cool . But I'd use it on another car: the wheelbase is just too long.
I'd have taken this from mr. lexan:

The wheelbase is a bit shorter than the outrage's, but mounted high enough, and a little back from central, it looks cool.

Thanks guys, I was pretty pleased with the results. I do feel that the wheel base on the car is a tad short for the body, but it isn't easy trying to pick out the right body when pretty much everything is online and you can't see it on your car until you get it. Oh well.
And Mr. Ed, I don't know anything about mr. lexan, maybe you need to introduce me and I can pick up a different shell. I may just pick up that ST-15 chassis, the plastic one now has hairline cracks next to the front end mounting screws. This cold weather does not play nice with plastic.

I managed to get in touch with Mr. Lexan, he sent me a link to his Bug bodies. Very nice, but I decided to keep the body I have.
I have decided to attempt making a new chassis using aluminum from scratch. (Mr. Ed, if you do send that chassis that is fine, I may need it as a back up if plan A fails.)
I got my hands on some 2.5mm aircraft grade aluminum and I made a stencil to cut a new chassis. I also got some stainless steel tubing to use for spacer rods between the chassis and upper deck. I am ordering the ST15 aluminum shock towers from Tower along with adjustable tie rods. I will be stretching the new chassis about 1/2 - 3/4 inches to make for a better fit with the body. I plan to reuse the upper deck but reinforce it with aluminum plate. I hope to fashion some sort of rear skid plate to help protect the motor too. I have had this thing pop up on two wheels when jumping from reverse to forward and it has left some marks on the motor. I have some aluminum bodied shocks that I can use from my DF02 chassis because I have some new ones on order for it. That is another project you guys may like to hear about, I might have to start a thread on it too.

I know this seems like a lot of work. I just try to think of it as a challenge.

I've got the chassis sitting on side, reserved for you don't worry.
Unfortunately getting to a post office during openingshours is a real challenge, or it would have long already.
I also put an ultima pro chassis (the brown anodised alu one) with it. It is used though , and the wheelbase is horter than the plastic chassis by about half an inch...
