Drum set style
Recently I have been watching several bands perform live on youtube. I never have cared much for Static X but was totally impressed with the drummer during this performance. I have not seen a drummer with this kind of flash for a long time. Kind of reminds me of Tommy Lee back in the day. They talk for a bit before they start playing but if you are into live bands, fast forward a bit and check out the drummer, pretty cool.

Re: Drum set style
the drummer from halestorm has quite a flamboyant playing style. reminds me alot of the drummers that were influences of mine in the mid/late 80's.

I am assumming you play? I have not sat down behind a drum set in years. I wish I would have stuck with it. I will have to check out Halestorm.

Dude that guy was going nuts? I love how the other guys are just swaying along and the drummer is all into it.
The praying mantis move at 2:25 is outstanding!!!
I have not laughed that hard in a looong time.

That guy is fun to watch, like Tommy Lee, but... I like drummers who crush.
My favorite drummer, Dale Crover. No time for anything flashy, too busy punishing the skins with all he's got.

And, my favorite drummer (Dale Crover) with my second favorite drummer Coady Willis, working together. Audio is a bit muddy, but you get the idea.

And finally, Coady by himself with his other band Big Business, doing a little impromptu slaying...

Re: Drum set style
My fav drummer is almost totally unheard of! Witch is unfortunate! I met him working the merch booth at a local Mushroomhead concert. He went out and played with Psyclone Nine later. He just met the band days before and learned their music! The entire show I watched him! He had the same intensity twirling sticks between every single beet all show long.
Heres a video, he is in it, but doesn't show off his true skills.

After that he did another entire show doing water drums for mushroomhead with the same level of intensity.
Small example

Unfortunately he has no great videos of his work online! If you ever go see a MRH concert he will be there doing his thing. But doubt many will! lol
O ya they call him Lil Dan

Re: Drum set style
i moved from drums to guitar in '89-90. my parents wouldn't buy me a drum set just in case i wouldn't stick with it. playing on a rubber practice pad gets old rather quick. my 15 year old son is the drummer of the family now. i bought him a tama set when he was 10, and it's taking him 5 years to figure out that he wants to be able to play well. i played the thing more than he did.bigjeepzz wrote:I am assumming you play?

his teacher is the drummer in this band. he's friends with the drummer from breaking benjamin and studies alot with him.

i've always loved the drummer in child's play's "rat race" video. spinnin' sticks left and right.....

i'm a hair band kinda guy, so that's where most of my influences come from.

Re: Drum set style
I've played the drums for about 14 years, only as a hobby though--one day I'd like to form or join a band, just for fun. Anyway, if you guys like that kind of drumming, you'll love Zoltan Chaney. Personally, I like the opposite--drummers who look like nothing is moving but their hands/wrists, no flair, no stick-twirls, economy of motion. Most of my favorite drummers look like they're hardly moving behind the kit, as if it's effortless.
Besides, all the stick-twirls and other shenanigans don't record well.
