A project I started a while back

Post by Seabass »

I was building 1/24 models for several years and I ran across several guys using some Toys R Us cheap RC trucks and stealing the axles from them. They were building some pretty awesome 1/24 rc trucks. I had just invested in my machines and sought out to make a custom set of 1/24 axles from raw materials.

I found it was much more difficult than I had imagined. I was able to make a complete rear axle after sourcing several different gears. The design however was garbage and I needed to make a new one peice housing to achieve the result I was looking for.

I have been thinking about trying to finish the axles. I have much more time on the machines now and I think I have the ability to get the done the right way. If I can get the axles made, I plan on building a 1/24 truck. I have the ESC, Servo, Tranny, and motor, I just need to get the axles done, (easier said then done). Here are some pics from the first attempt. These things are tiny.

That is "SWEET" !!!! I started out in the hobby world some 35 years ago, with 1/32 scale Airplanes, moved on to RC boats then RC Airplanes and now RC cars. I was in Seattle for 15 years and in the hobby clubs we had some retired Boeing Machinest - and "WOW" some of the stuff they bult. Minature working steam engines, etc... Was just amazing what they came up with !!!

Guys this is a super tough job.

I decided to work on a new one peice axle housing and have most of it done. I have already tunred the brass bushings and pressed them into the housing. I am going to strat working on the axle itself here in a bit.

I have already hogged out the diff housing to accept the gears. I still have a small amount of material to remove and I should be able to get the gears and axle installed.

I will post another pic with a comparison pic to an RC10. You guys won't beleive exactly how small this axle is.

I finished the rear axle today. The gears are inplace and the axle has been machined as well as the wheels. The axle pulls very strong under power and should be perfect for a 1/24 crawler.

The front axle is where I will run into problems. Making tiny u-joints is practically impossible. I have tried it before and ended in complete failure.

Anyway here are some pics of what I did this weekendand a comparison pic next to an RC10. A rear shock is longer and has a greater OD that the entire axle

That screw in the picture is a 4-40 sitting next to the pinion gear and shaft. I still need to mill the spring perches using the two round places that really don't belong. That will happen after I get the chassis built. I need to look at drive shaft abgle and the perches need to be right.

I don't know what your shell plans were, but Losi just released a 4WD 1/24 truck, might fit well, awesome build job so far.

This is one of those things that I started and need to finish. I was told by a couple of people my machines could not do the job. I have to attempt it.

I have seen the 1/24 Losi trucks but I would rather try to make my own.

:D

Oh I see.

I am going to use a 1/24 Scale plastic model for the body. Almost perfect lines for a scale look.
