T2 body RUINED!!

Post by sneako43 »

I just finished a rebuild of a RC10T (my first rebuild). Everything went smooth until it came time to trim and paint the T2 body. Longs story short, I did a horrible job. I can't cut and I can't paint!

Is there a paint pro out there that would donate their time and skill? I am on a tight budget and cannot afford to pay for more than return shipping.

Laught all you want at this request...I know it's asking quite a bit of someone.

Sorry for the ridiculous request! I'm just going to buy another body and try again.

The problem was using flourescents. It went on way too thick...gobs, runs, just a mess. I wasn't happy with my mounting holes, anyway. It was a bit off-center.

I already ordered another body. This time, I WON'T USE flourescents!

My post asking for a charity paint job was written soon after I finished my body. I was frustrated and a little embarrassed.

I will definitely post some redemeption photos when the new lid is complete.

Fluorescents aren't too bad. You gotta remember that they'll never look like they're on thick enough, no matter how many coats or how "thick" you apply them. Lay down a few easy, even coats. Then they need to be backed with a bright solid color afterwards like white or silver. This makes them "pop" more and they won't look translucent...

Lay fluorescents on as thin as possible. Put it on as light as you can get it. Build LOTS of coats, and let dry completely between each coat. It will look lumpy and spotty the first few coats, but take your time, water based paints build up with coats. DO NOT PUT ON ANY WATER BASED PAINT HEAVY. Back fluorescents with WHITE only if you want them to be day-glo bright.

Fluorescents can be difficult to work with, but they are not impossible. They just need a little extra attention, and white backing is the key.

And yes, asking for a free paint job after you screwed it up yourself is like asking the plumber to fix your toilet for free after you broke the pipes and it's spraying water all over your house.

I lay the faskolor fluorescents down thin only two coats. I use a heat gun to dry between coates and back with white. My problem is when I remove the mask the flourescents want to come up with tape. What am I doing wrong?

Heating it too quickly with the heat gun. If it is coming up like rubber cement, that's a dead giveaway. Try not to dry it too quickly with the heat gun, and use a cooler setting on the gun, too. Also, if you use more coats of the fluorescents, you will get a brighter, richer color, too.

Also, make sure you wash the body thoroughly before painting and masking, using dish soap. There are silicone mold release agents that are used on the body in the manufacturing process that MUST be washed off, otherwise, you run the risk of bad paint adhesion.

and scuff it too, use a scotch brite pad. It will give the paint something to bite on to.

The problem I am having with fluorescents (faskolor) is that the paint wants to peel up with the tape.

I finally got around to replacing the body I ruined. Treehugger helped me out by doing the final trim work on the body (Thanks again). It's cool when forum members live only a few miles away!

It turned out pretty well. Not 100% happy with the mounting but now I know what not to do on the next one.

Decals help hide some masking mistakes! Overall, I'm happy with the result. Not bad for my third painted body. Thanks guys for all the tips and for NOT taking me up on my request...it made me put the paint on myself!
