So, my wife has argued that the interest in vintage RC cars is a generational thing and will pass as we get older and become more or less extinct with the next generetion. I'm not so sure. I think that with as with full scale vintage cars the interest will always be there. The focus will just shift from what we had when we were young to whatever there is out there now that the kids are running. Slash's? ugh. Anyway my question is, do you think that our vintage vehicles will continue to be sought after by future generations, or will it just become some niche hobby of the past that fades into obscurity like control line aircraft? Will your kids value your cars as you did?

I agree with your wife as it's a generational thing. vintage collecting really appeals to the 30-40 somethings. once we're gone, our kids will probably not want all our junk

I don't think it's as easy as calling it a "generational" thing. I think that it's more of a certain personality type. Those that love RC will likely always have them around to play with, share with their kids, and eventually the grand kids. I think that when it's something that's in your blood, you'll stick with it, particularly when you're talking about good quality, hobby grade RC. Nikko and the like are merely toys that will be broken, and forgotten long before the credit card bill gets paid.

well i look at it this way im only twenty one years old and i would rather build up a gold pan or a hornet or even a clod buster b4 i would ever buy a slash(or w.e. those r called) or a b44... i know some local kids who race cars like this also. i know 1 14 year old kid that races an edinger... so its not goin away with the 30-40 year old crowd at least not as long as there are kids like us out here using the good stuff...

It may not be as popular as it is with our generation, but there will always be an interest in it. Just look at anything else that is older than you that you might be interested in. My favorite car stopped being made three years before I was born. My favorite art is from the 16th century.

I am 27 and have a strong love for the rc10s. It was how i was introduced to the great world of RC! It seems every year that i like them more and more. Its a addiction that only gets stronger as the years go by:D

While I think that the kids of today who are into R/C will probably wanna collect the cars they couldn't afford when they get older, once ya start collecting, a guy tends to want to get more unusual, obscure, and just older stuff than they are used to....
So in a way, the younger R/C generation collectors may just seek out the old Kyoshos, AYK's, Yokomos, etc.....to compare it's quality and their "qwirks" to the cars they were used to.
Regardless, this such a small community as it is, there will always be a few diehard "re-enactors of R/C"....just like Civil War guys...haha

I hate to admit it but I think your wife is right. If she thinks that it is a "generaltional" thing...then maybe in her definition it is. Unfortunately for her, there are diehard fans out there like us who are between the ages of 30-40's who can't get enough of this stuff. Our generation were the ones that saw it happened firsthand but couldn't afford it back then. Since the internet is here to stay, it makes us able to chit chat whatever thoughts are in our mind...things that make us say...."dang, you got that one". When I buy a new kit I'm always telling my wife that although I am buying for myself, it's really for my kids when they grow up. That statement is by far but true, heck...if they need money..they can always sell the darn thing for college or something ya know. My local hobby store has a sign that reads "He who dies with the most toys, Wins"

I like my vintage stuff for sure to bring me back to the day. I do it for the fun but have no dillusions that anyone in the future will care about my junk. I'm sure if I dropped tomorrow my wife would drop it all in a dumpster

I like running my JRX2 and rc10 and then thrashing a new Traxxas and then a new Losi mini truck as well. It's all in fun, I know some people get offended when we call them toys, I do not, and that is how I view them, nice toys to bring enjoyment.

For me, the mid-80s stuff brings back memories of spending time with my father and friends, building, playing and having fun. It wasn't so much that it was RC but rather an activity that taught me how to use my hands, have patience and show good sportsmanship.
The same goes for my kids; I love tinkering with anything with them. The other day my son who is 8 showed me a stop-motion Lego movie he had shot and edited... even adding sound, opening score and end credits. We have plans to shoot one with my old Star Wars stuff soon and he's going to teach me!!
To me that's what is lacking in today's RTR world: the old kits and the constant tinkering that went along with them and the bonds that time spent together formed, whether it be father and daughter or grandfather and grandson or just friends. Sniffle.

What's your point? I've got a few of those too! That's the great thing about being an adult, you get to have the things you wanted as a kid but couldn't.
