Nikko Rhino

Post by Erich Reichert »

There was some talk of this car a while back so I thought I'd scan this one too.

There were two on ebay at the same time, weird or what, you haven't got any Dandy Dash or Super Sprint by Nikko in that lot by any chance?
Thanks Tim

A hotshot style body fitted to reverse engineered grasshopper : genious commercial mind.

These were the first toy grade buggies I remeber seeing: inspired a whole series of trash later.
Before all you could get was touringcars and F1: suited for the kitchen floor only.

My brother-in-law has one of these in his mom's attic, I wonder if it's worth restoring? It has the Grasshopper-style livery (smaller inset photo in the above ad).

If it's $$ then both on ebay fetched a good price, but as to finding spares :?

You can get spares for the Rhino - they come up all the time on eBay. Nikko released most parts as spares back in the day, including the body set (which I found in a hobby store a while back).

Prior to the Rhino, there were plenty of toy grade off-roaders around, with varying degress of limited off road ability, but they weren't buggies.

The Taiyo Jet Hopper came out around the same time or a bit before the Rhino (both came out in 1986), and also had a number of spare parts available. Unlike the toys of today.

cheers,
H.

Neat!

That was my 1st 10th scale car.

I bought my frog about a year or so after the Rhino.

Other than the bumper, mine was exactly the same as the ad. I remember how fast 20-25 MPH seemed back in '86...

I still have the rolling chassis. It was gutted, and later used for a Bolink S-10 bodied drag racer in the early 90's. Once ball bearings, a modified motor, and hobby grade electronics were added, it flat-out screamed. That gear diff was impossible to trash! Of course you didn't have any choice in gear ratios..

I still have a few NOS parts laying around for it.

Other than the toy grade electronics, the car's quality was close to Tamiya's.
Projects and shelfers:
Late Edinger, RC10B2, Dual Sport, GT, Kyosho Turbo Ultima, Triumph, Tamiya Sand Scorcher, Blackfoot/Monster Beetle, '67 Beetle, Nikko Rhino, Traxxas Fiero, Slash, Hand-built Dune Buggy..all on here somewhere...
