i've been eyeing up the graphite tubing for last last couple years at hobbytown. like you have done, i was gonna make wing tubes out of it, but also, nose brace tubes for a tub car. whenever i have a jrx2/t with the 5 link and have no direction planned for the build (replica, etc.), i want to make new links out the graphite tubing with heim ends.
is the i.d. of that tubing too large to tap 4-40 threads into it?

I like it.
Don't worry about all of the "why" questions - if you're having fun, that's all that matters.

The size I used is too small for 4-40 and anthing smaller as going to be really weak! You need to cut the stuff with a high speed disk of some kind because the stuff splinters easy! No hacksaw! I would wrap tape around the area to be cut as well.scr8p wrote:i've been eyeing up the graphite tubing for last last couple years at hobbytown. like you have done, i was gonna make wing tubes out of it, but also, nose brace tubes for a tub car. whenever i have a jrx2/t with the 5 link and have no direction planned for the build (replica, etc.), i want to make new links out the graphite tubing with heim ends.

Yeah, always be careful when cutting carbon fiber. The stuff produces a ton of dust, so always wear a mask and cut upwind, and if you sand it use water. The splinters hurt like heck, and don't swell up and eventually push themselves out like a wood splinter. Glue the edges with CA when you're done, so it doesn't split later.
The LHS has that stuff in the plane section, I've thought about trying it for 6-32 crawling links, not as small at 4-40. Try threading the right-hand side of a very short turnbuckle in one side, and gluing it in place. Then glue a section of threaded rod in the other end, and you'll have a real turnbuckle with just the small nut on one side.

Edited original post because the pics got lost somehow.
I didn't notice how yellowed the arms are until I looked at these pics again. Time to get the peroxide out again!
