Rear shock tower. Early JRX2 cars have the top solid one. Later cars, and as far as I know, JRXT trucks, have the one with the big holes. Note on the early solid one, around the body tab, it kinda dips down around the tab. This has always been the part that jumps out at me when looking at early cars.

Perhaps a little off subject, as I don't know if this ever came with the kit, may just be an option part.
But being performance oriented, always thought it was interesting.
The original diff gear, small center hole, rides on the outer gear hub. Then a 'pro diff' gear with a center bearing.

Not sure about this one, but I think it is different than what Anthony posted earlier. A early shock end, I think it is thinner around the ball, and is rounded. Not a very good image, I'm just using a scanner, I'll see if I can get a better shot.

I recently got a better camera(I'm completely in over my head, but slowly learning how to use something other than auto-mode), I need to re-shoot some of the comparisons. The grey shock end pictured by bongo above is in the earlier shock parts comparison.

The interesting thing about the ball bearing diff gear is not so much the gear itself, but the special bearings. They are thinner than standard bearings of the same id/od. Using a standard width bearing will not allow for 2 of them to fit in the housing, but this may be better in its own tech topic.

The material of the no-hole rear shock tower is also different from the later one, and there is a matching front tower.
I have never seen a satisfactory explanaion for what the 2 "extra" holes on the early rear tower are for, but they are carried over to the newer version.

Here is a comparison between the no holes and the newer style rear shock tower. The no-hole tower is a little bit thicker

There is a front tower made of the same material, this used example has had the body mount cut off.

I dont know the REAL reason for the 2 lower holes, but I used a set of front shocks on the rear for a while...2nd hole is in the perfect spot for it. I was racing dirt oval at the time - NOT - off road.

Some where along the line Losi added an additinal hole to the hub carrier.

found another variation tonight. I was rebuilding/upgrading my VONATS racer: adding a slipper clutch and thorp aluminum BB diff gear.
When putting the whole thing back together I noticed that the inner slipper plate did not sit as far down as it should.

A little investigation lead me to find that there are 2 transmission cases (3 if you count the grey one)
The difference is in the size of the hole for the trans output shaft. The presumeably older version has a narrow opening(about1/4") while the newer one has a 5/16" hole. Not a huge difference, but enough to give clearance to the slipper backing plate.
The pictured 5/16" case was just taken out of the package for the picture. It had the original jrx-2 logo header card on it.

This chassis comes from the very 1st run of JR-X2's released to hobby shops and belongs to my lhs guy Bob whose been there since 1984, he tells me that as soon as they got them in stock he put a kit aside for himself. I was surprised at the course finish to the bottom of this chassis which although it has a few extra holes is in pretty good shape. Click on the pictures to see an enlarged view, the rough surface stands out better that way.

Man, thanks for posting the pics of the chassis. I got one of the first batch also, way back when, and that is the thing I remember the most about that car. The other thing is the box cover. No pictures, just some text and logos. You got the feeling that Losi was trying to get the kit out to the public as soon as they could, artwork was secondary. Sadly, when I moved 3 years ago I threw out the original box

I'm slightly confused about all of this. How are you supposed to build a correct vehicle if all the parts are different? How do you know what to use and what goes with what? Does everyone just ignore all the variations and mash the parts together?

I guess it depends on what your goal is with your build. For instance for my JRX2 runner I didn't care what part exactly I put on the car. I just wanted a 5 link suspension car with period parts and electronics. I chose function over form and correctness. However I have started building an RC10 GP (same problem with the RC10 as well, maybe not as much, but still alot of variation on the same parts), and with this car I am being more careful as to which parts I decide to put on the car. So I guess if you are just planing on building a runner, then IMO is doesn't really matter, as long as it works and looks decent. For a shelf queen you may want more correct parts to create that ever "original car".

just going through a full rebuild on my early textured bottom chassis jrx2 and found this layshaft, every part i have contributes to a very early car so this must also! it is all black like the axles on the buggy. very cool ha
