I'm going to venture that you are right on all your traxxas assumptions. In a different thread he mentioned he made his own stealth plate to mount a t2 cover but I think its still the rc10stealth tranny.

but there is nowhere to mount the tranny brace...

First I have to say sorry for the poor quality photos
my camera on a ship to Greenland with my son

How I mounted the T2 tranny is simple
2 pieces of black G10 with 4 holes each is screwed on to the tranny

Is that home made? That looks like a castor wedge that screws between the chassis and front suspension mounts and adds kick-up when using a flat chassis with no kick-up.

yes and no
It's a castor wedge but I used it to reduce castor when we raced on carpet
