Sorry, I guess what I was referring to was more the box art rear spring cups, crystal clear gear cover, fiberglass battery straps, boxart (non goodyear) tires, double servo saver car--sorry for
my vagueness, thanks!

Did Associated ever make a prototype 1/18th scale rc on-road car in the late 1970's or early 1980's?

If we did, I've never seen it. Sorry, I can't be more specific. I didn't know everything that went on in the research and development dept.

Hello Steve-
I'd like to ask Gene what was the high point of his career at Associated? And does he have any regrets? For example, not developing a dirt oval car or hiring a specific team driver?

Thanks

Mark

Gene said it was winning the first IFMAR World Championships. It made the team feel that they could do it again!

Gene Husting answers:
"The Cop was a friend of mine who lived on our street, at that time.
I told him what I wanted to do, and he said "Sure, it sounds like FUN".
I cannot remember his name, now. "

In that case, I think he used to live across the street from us when we lived in Fountain Valley, Ca. That's the only officer I knew of in the neighborhood. [Steve]

Cool, thanks for the info. Seems in the late 80s and early 90s everybody wanted their guys front-and-center in their ads, before computer graphics and layouts and extensive photoshoots took over. It lead to some pretty funny visuals with the hair and clothes of the time LOL

Steve could you ask Gene if he knows what happened to the Jay Halsey 4wd 2nd place car from the 1985 IFMAR World Championships? There is reference made of it in the Gene Husting Video #10 that it might have been built in Japan and Roger Curtis and Jim Halsey had to work on it quite a bit to get the bugs out of it. Jay almost won the World Championship with this car. Thanks.

Hi Steve-
I was finally able to find a picture of an Associated 1/18th scale car but not the picture that I was looking for of your dad holding the car in his palm. Do you remember the 4th Annual Southern California 1/12th scale regional race? Attached is a picture of your 3rd place concours dual entry of your 1/12th and 1/18th scale Lola T600 (photo taken from Feb 1982 issue of Radio Control Modeler). Julie Husting finished 2nd in the Novice Stock A main, Gene Husting finished 2nd in the Expert Stock B main and you finished 4th in the Expert Stock A main. I hope this brings back some memories as I would like to hear more about the 1/18th scale cars.

Thank-you

That was not my car, but my brother's car, Curtis Husting. He had a later version of that car, so I shot pictures and added them. I asked Curtis, lead machinist at Team Associated, about the car in the picture, then put the conversation in Q&A format.

Q: What inspired you to make this car?
A: Delta had come out with a small car like it. It was slow, and I thought I could make a faster one.

Q: So this was not a car designed for Associated for release?
A: No, it was a personal challenge. I did it for fun.

Q: How many were made?
A: I made the one in the picture around the time of the 12i. At that time, the electronics were not very good. Several years went by before the electronics had made significant improvements and at that point I made another one, the one in the color photographs. (That's why the electronics seem more up to date in these pictures.) It is similar to the first one. When Cliff Lett saw it, I made one for him. We raced them in his garage on a carpet track. It was a lot of fun!

Q: How about the body? Was it a Delta body?
A: No, I made it myself. I created the mold out of wood. You can see it in the photographs. Then I used Associated's vacuum-forming machine.

Q: You used an Associated decal on the body. I guess that caused people to think it was an Associated car back then!
A: Who knew people would bring up the subject years later!
