Good Starting Setups for 5 Link and H Arm Cars
Getting ready for the Vintage Nats and looking for some good starting points. I haven't wrenched on or setup a 5 Link car since I first got one the week they came out (dating myself a little
) Anybody have a good base point? The track is hard packed clay, gets a little dusty mid race, with medium grip. We usually run Double Dees, Holeshots, or Goosebumps. Any input would be appreciated!

When i ran my jrx2 at St Ives the track was very grippy and of all things i had a pair of bow ties on the rear. The car entered corners diferently depending on whether you were on the gas a little or rolling. I found the rear end would bite under power, kinda cool when you wanted to make a fast lap and of all things the car never span around once under power out of a corner.

Go to the 9th post down, that's what I ran last year.
I tried a few different spring rates, and this worked well. I would probably go with a slightly heavier weight oil in the rear. It tended to jump with the ass end high.

Re: Good Starting Setups for 5 Link and H Arm Cars
I was set up similar to brandon, but had a short wheelbase x-2. I ran green springs in the rear, one heavier than silver, but ran nimh instead of lipo, so the car was probably a bit heavier back there.
This year on the truck I have 1.2" rear shock bodies with 1.0 shafts(because that's all I had in the bin), with RPM dual stage red pistons 40 weight oil and the original black progressive springs. The progressives seem to be a bit stiffer than the modern blue(4.1), which is needed to support the extra weight of the body and body mounts.

Re: Good Starting Setups for 5 Link and H Arm Cars
In my setup, I ran the Pro rear shocktower. If I had to do it over again I would have just ran the original X2 rear tower. As you can see I have the top shock mount in the far inboard hole just to keep the spring from rubbing the upper trailing link. I believe I ran the lower shock pivot in the 2nd to last hole in the bottom link. I think I was running the #2 antisquat pivot block. Basically the main reason I went with the 5 link was for sentimental reasons. They are great for bumpy loamy tracks, but not so much for the hardpacked clay that is predominant now.
If I wanted more tuning options, I would go with the H arm setup with the Junior 2 rear hubs. H arm setup also allows more antisquat options. Then move the top shock mounting point to where the Pro kit specified.
I ran this car for 1 race at Thunder RC in Nashville the week after the Vonats in 2wd buggy class. Not a big class that night, but I was competing with B4's with 10.5/19t motors against this car with a stock motor. It held it's own! Paul Sinclair got behind the wheel for a few minutes after the race night was done, and made it look awesome. He seemed to enjoy the car and was impressed with the old hardware!
