Had a little Earth Quake Last Night

Post by tizeye »

We had a 6.5 quake last night followed by a few smaller ones it went on for a few minutes...not much damage but scarey none the less...gentle slow rocking motion..there was even a tsunami warning...I live by the coast so that was a worry but the wave turned out to be only a few inches tall...

This is the second one that we've had in the last 6-8 years...the first one was bigger and had a real rolling motion to it..like waves on land..it was in the early hours of the morning and we lived in a really old house that had those big lead counter weights in the window frames. The first thing I heard was this banging inside the walls I couldn't work out what it was for a few seconds.....it still did hardly any damage to buildings. Trouble is a fault line runs along the length of most of the country so we have to live with them...and it is kind of cool to experience a force of nature like that...

That's what I think or would like to think.

Glad you got through it without any issues.

When I was in college at SIU (1967) we had the earthquake that was talked about for years. The New Madrid fault runs for a long ways through the the central US and I was in my dorm when everything started to shake. My tv was sitting on a bookshelf and I just managed to keep it from falling off. It was an experience I still remember to this day. I guess if I lived in Calif. it would just be another day in the life.

You might think that, but you'd be surprised how nervous even the natives get when we get a rumbler. On occasion we get something the likes of Loma Prieta, back in '89. That's the one that dropped the upper deck of the freeway onto the lower deck in San Francisco. Most of the time they're just localized quivers that don't rate more than a sound bite on the evening news.

I have a childhood friend that I grew up with in Florida and even went to college with in Orlando that now lives outside of LA..... they scare the crap out of her. I've known her husband since middle school as well, but I honestly don't know if they even phase him. I am sure he is effected just a bit, admitting it or not, as they recently had their first child.

We have quakes everyday here but most we can't even feel. It's the ones that happen in the still of the night that creep you out.

This is the website we use when we feel one to see where it's located. Pretty much, no one gives a crap unless they measure around 5.0.

I forgot to add...6.5 is quite a jolt. Glad you are ok.

We even got a tsunami warning for the Australian mainland east coast and Tasmania. Dunno why they bothered if NZ didn't even cop anything

No quakes yet in PA, but I lived through a killer tornado that leveled everything in it's path and I'm sure I never want to do that again!
If it isn't broke, I haven't driven it yet.

It was larger than I originally thought it was 7.8 which is massive..it was our biggest in over 86 years... just as well it was in an isolated part of the country...whole cities get leveled elsewhere with much smaller quakes we are very very lucky..
