Poor quality Nitro Brute video. Look how cool it looks with the big tires before Derek ruined it!

Those tires should definitely be a little easier on it. Those giant meats were cool, but has to be hard on that trucks internals.

Awesome posts!

Is your rig really sloppy like mine (check out the video). I have so much play in my rear... I guess axles where the fit in the knuckle arms. I am not sure what I will need to replace to fix this. I suppose this might do the trick? https://www.shapeways.com/product/PD2PW2NFL/kyosho-big-brute-high-rider-corvette-double-dare?optionId=85609218

If I can get this and the binding in my gear box fixed I will be set (I see you had some shims you used for the gear box - I am very interested in hearing more about that)!

In your vid, it looks like the right side has alot of play in the axle thru the bearing. Check that...does the truck have full bearings? it needs to. On the left side (and probably right side too) alot of play is coming from the rod ends. Mine had that to...if u look 2 pics up, i installed rod ends on the backside of the rear knuckles too. It eliminated all the slop....i have none and this thing was a pile when i got it and gets ran quite often....heres a link to the rod ends i used...but the stock black ones work good too they just popped off if i hit anything and these cant:

As far as the shims in my gearbox mine is different than your big brute. About the only similarities inside there would be the 3 bevel gears in the diff gear. Thats where i shimmed both sides with an o-ring inside before the output shafts were put thru the gearcase. I also drilled the bevel gears out and put steel pins thru them, the gears kept falling out of the diff gear. Not i single issue since these changes

I actually was in the process of taking things apart when you responded and realized it had bushings! I incorrectly thought I had put bearings in it 30 years ago. I had a set as they came with the transmission bearings and I installed them and all the slop is pretty much gone except for the worn out control arm slop.

What kind of O-rings do you have? They look like they were metal? Thanks so much for the help!I am going to have to take apart the transmission again but I think there might be a way to shim the crossbars in mine too.

Not sure which pic u r referring to on the metal shims?

I bought a cheap o-ring kit on Ebay that comes with every size in the book for $15 or so

coxbros1 wrote: Tue Jan 29, 2019 2:00 pm The tranny wasnt smooth when i got it, and it wasnt smooth when reassembled it. The pinion gear was pushing to hard on the ring gear, so i shimmed it with those little silver shims a few thousands. Also the bevel gears that press onto the axle shafts are pressing to hard on the differential gears....so i shaved a few thousands off the backside of those to get some clearance

These are the shims I was talking about. I suck at the internet so the pic didn’t come over (1st page if this post).

I gotcha now, those are .21 clutch shims. They held the tranny apart so it didn't bind up. The o-rings are in a different area by the diff. Is your tranny similar to the nitro version?

I think that is exactly what I need! I think my trans is similar to yours. See page 5 in this manual.

Where do you get the shims from?

Thanks
