Nitro hawk update

Post by Nitrohawk93 »

I recently got a wild hair and decided to pull my old nitro hawk out and give it a bit of a freshen up. My uncle gave this to me probably 20 years ago. Back then I modified it for a standard style crank, and put a disc brake setup on from a nitro rustler using the rustler input shaft and some custom brackets. (Huge upgrade from the clutch bell brake, and a lot better engine choices) the steering linkage was also worn out and I used a tmaxx setup.

This time around I pretty much just cleaned it up, dropped in a new 2.5 and some s9351 futaba servos. I've been searching high and low for another dahm's body but haven't been able to find anything. I'm still debating between the tbg nitro hawk body, or the srt body which I like a lot better. The only other thing I'd like to do is modify a rear exhaust header to use the old school mip stinger pipe.

Here's a few pics of it's current state, and one with the old dynamite .12 and mip exhaust.

A rustler body works pretty well but can't say it would work with that exhaust. The new exhaust idea is kinda restrictive to the 2.5 but won't be an issue if you built a shelfer.

Very nice piece, seeing it makes me want to run my first Nitro powered vehicle. First gen Nitro Street.
Who do you race for ?
Me……. I race for me.
That’s impossible, I was told you need a sponsor to race.
Hey Cru ! Go balls out 8)

Yea, I figured the stinger pipe would be pretty restrictive on a 2.5. but I definitely need to figure out some kind of rear exhaust setup for body clearance.

Well as soon as I got the engine broke in and making some power the plastic idler gear stripped. So I decided to build up a brand new transmission with a new case, new Bearings, a steel idler gear and a hot racing sealed diff with steel ring gear. Hopefully this one will hold up.

with that hardened idler gear you'll want to do yourself a favor and get the delrin top shaft gear if you're gonna run it. The 2 together will outlast that truck. Not so much metal on metal.

The steel idler and top gear i used are factory paired components on the xl5 and vxl rustler. They use a full metal gear set out of the box. According to the taxxas website the delrin top shaft gear is meant to be used with the machined aluminum idler gear.

Yeah, wasn't paying attention to part numbers. When you stated steel my mind went to the hardened aluminum idler like you posted last. Thats the only way I've ever built them that they lasted anyway. Wasn't thinkin steel.

Good luck holding the line on them.
