NRC-24 1/24scale RC10 replica

Post by RogueIV »

Looks like the NRC is making a final run of these 1:24 scale Goldpan and Blackpan. Figured other might be interested as well. https://www.nrcprojects.com/shop

I ordered a goldpan myself.

They're converting 5 of the black ones to gold pans. last I saw they have 5 gold and 4 black not sure how long that'll last though lol

white was a bit too bright for my liking so now I'm making some soup

The coffee seems to help make it a more natural ivory color. Here a part of a sprue i tested it on for a few hours compared to an untouched wheel.

I might dye the wheels a different color but not sure yet.

Well I finished up the chassis build. Fun build, a bit more work than a typical model since all of the nylon bits are SLS printed you have to clean out the unsintered powder from from the holes and do a bit of cleaning up of surfaces. The parts are really high quality.

There are a few issues I had though first being the instructions need to be put in proper order, they kinda skip around and the parts weren't always in the bags they mentioned.
Second, my kit had a malformed CVD that was binding up the drivetrain.
Third, the shocks are sub optimal. The shock shafts are just screws so you have screw threads riding in an aluminum hole of the shock body which binds up a bit, fine if the car is just sitting on a shelf but i can't imagine that being great if you're trying to run it (which i will be) and would have preferred some oil filled shocks even if they didn't look quite perfect.

On the pros side this thing looks amazing and once built seem well constructed.
They give you quite a few extra bits for hardware as well.
The ball diff feels better than most 1/10 scale ones.
The chassis is quite rigid when assembled and the finish is nice.

Can't wait to get some electronics in this buggy and paint up the body.

Also I need to get a gold pan at some point soon now.

That looks so cool , can't wait to see it all ready to run :D is the chassis tub made in two parts ?
I'd be tempted to seal the plastic parts with clear coat , sintered nylon when it gets dirty is a pain to clean .
Are you going to do a running video ?
If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.

I'll try to do a running vide when i get all the electronics. Might be a bit though.

The chassis is actually 3 parts the bottom plate is one part and the sides are separate.

Yeah SLS stuff is a bit annoying to keep clean. Clear coat might not be a bad idea.

I'll definitely be making a few items for this car myself too.

I'm interested to see what electronics you use. I've got one of these coming too.

I'm thinking of the furitek setup but i want to see what my LHS has on hand first, not sure what they have for stuff of this scale but i did see that they have some new mini onroad RCs so i'm hoping the electronics for those fit. I'm not planning on going too nuts with this thing as I don't want to destroy it.

Now the real question is what do I do for paint? I don't really want to do the old Masami paint as that's been done to death. I was thinking either Lett's Moo paint or doing Masami's current paint scheme to make this match my Genova. Also thinking of unique styles as well but this body is pretty small so not sure if I'll paint it myself or farm it out to my local paint guy, Dominator's Airbrushing.

So i finally got this thing up and running despite having some small issues sourcing parts. Chris at RC Madness hooked me up with a servo for free, an NOS JR DS287MG micro servo, so you could say this is slightly vintage

Went with the Hobbywing EZRUN Combo Mini28 ESC with 1626SD 6500kv motor. I have to say I love how this looks scale accurate to the bigger 1/10 scale motor. Power is great and has really smooth power delivery. Can't wait to get this out on a track.
IMG_20231229_211838033.jpg
Battery I went with a Fantom MVS 2.0 Mini Max Pro LiPo. It's a little loose fitting but is fine. I'm still waiting on a micro receiver but I tossed one of my regular ones in for the time being.

I decided, for better or worse, to paint up the body myself. had some issues, but it's not the worst thing i've done. I definitely need more practice on cutting clean lines in liquid mask. Also trying these methods on such a small body was a bit challenging. I also didn't thin out the orange enough so it's a bit splotchy. Overall though it isn't terrible and I look forward to trying more painting in the future.
IMG_20240105_200125563.jpg
Currently I'm working on retrofitting some oil dampers as the supplied shocks, while they look nice, are like pogosticks. I got a set of Proline 1/24 Big Bore Scaler Shocks made for the SCX24 (PRO638700). These have roughly 34mm uncompressed length and 26mm compressed length. The originals are 30mm uncompressed to 26mm compressed for the front and 38.5mm uncompressed to 34mm compressed for the rear. The front droop is limited by the suspension arms so i don't need to worry about over extension but the rears are a bit too short. Furthermore, these use very small, looks like 1.4mm screws which are too small for the buggy that uses 2mm screws. I have designed up some upper mounts so i can use the 2mm hardware and 2 different pairs lower perches to adjust them to the proper uncompressed length.

Printing them out now and will see how they work out.

Success! The adapters worked out pretty well. I do need to source properly sized rear springs though. The included "stiff" springs aren't enough to keep the back of the car level. I put some placeholders on the rear but the diameter is wrong. Definitely got rid of the pogostick effect.

I might try my hand at anodizing the shock bodies gold at some point. What dye is good for that?

got my micro receiver in and working from Mini RC Planet. I have to say top notch support from them. Contacted them on FB and they helped me out with my issue and sent me a new tested unit. Definitely a lot better than having that full sized rx shoe horned in there.

Better late than never. Finally got to run through a pack with this car.
https://youtu.be/iX6fidecUCE

It handles Carpet pretty well, didn't get to test any jumps but it should handle small ones fine. This thing is pretty fast for it's size and was driving pretty well against a few MiniZ that were testing there earlier.

What's everyone using for a pinion and Motor on their NRC24? I got this kit:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09HZ82Y1Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And the motor screws DO NOT line up. The pinion I got fit but doesn't have a grub screw - basically just a press fit.

Thanks
