Team Associated Japan RC10GX (unboxing) early six gear tranny

Post by TokyoProf »

This was the first RC10GX (NIB) I ever saw auctioned off in Japan. It is the earliest version of the RC10-GX. The main difference between this and the US spec is the inclusion of Yokomo aluminum wheel adaptors for Yokomo 2.15 inch rear wheels, extra spring set, and Japanese advice manual. The manual inside highlights compatibility with Yokomo rims and tires as the biggest advantage. Before Masami Hirosaka would win the 1989 IFMAR title with the RC10-GX (special prototype), he won the 1989 JMRCA Offroad All Japan Championship earlier in the year with the RC10GX (see below). This was an important foundational car being the last of the pre-stealth transmission car (this is a six gear).

The long front shock tower and long shocks also became a popular upgrade for Japanese drivers of the RC10GX. Many used RC10GX have this setup. Subsequent RC10GX versions added more Yokomo parts for durability (such as the white Kevlar bumper, YZ ball ends and ball cups, universal shafts, and plastic wing). In the end, the biggest difference in 1989 was Yokomo’s rim size and tire technology advantage. The IFMAR race shows that 4 of the top 5 spots were won by the RC10GX and then one RC10 Graphite at the 7th spot. It would be nice to see pictures or details of those cars! More pictures and explanations will be added. Feel free to add or comment.

Seen the thread, and have the buggy too. After two hours, burning through a whole lot of cash, and reading through Japanese magazines to post about the GX for this forum ... I need one person out there to give me positive encouragement to keep posting. Just one lol.

Are you planning to build it, or is it staying as parts?

Only because you are a Kiwi...here are some additional photos of the GX. Best experience of my life was studying abroad at Auckland Uni where I did Maori studies. I learned hongi, scuba, backpacking, repelling off a cliff, polynesian culture, and nice strangers --random guys at church inviting me over their home for buttered toast and river rafting--I didn't know you put that much butter on toast lol. I will post pictures of my separate built GX later on.

Any dates for the release of this tub version of the GX? Im looking at your rear hubs, look like 91-92 lightened versions? I see this is stealth gearbox, the version of Masamis 89 Reedy i believe it was sporting stealth due to the rear screws look inboard for stealth. Also wondering if Masamis rear TH-1 were the pre lightened versions, 2 screws versus this later 4 star pattern. Keep posting!

Hello! The GX only refers to graphite chassis models. There were primarily two versions of the GX. The unboxing pictures in this post, and a later version with stealth transmission, green hard anodized shocks and other Yokomo parts addition. The gold tub version and the stealth transmission you might be referring to is the RC10 AX. Go here for some photos http://www.time-tunnel.jp/01/000-070RC10ax2.html. Since there is an interest for the FX and AX RC10 models we can try to create a different post on those tub models. Thanks again.

Would you build it as a shelf display? Or, keep it unassembled. I'm 50/50 lol. I have yet to come across an unassembled six-gear GX for auction...like ever...so I might just leave it alone for now.

I like this model within RC10 engineering history as the last competitive attempt to win with the six-gear transmission. This is why it's cool for me.
After this model, it was goodbye to the old stuff and then more than two decades of dominance using the three-gear transmission first prototyped and introduced at the 1989 IFMAR worlds.

That is a tough decision. It is probably most unusual to stay as unassembled parts. For my personal collection, I like to be able to see assembled vehicles.

Thank you for the translations! The Japanese/US innovations to the RC10 GX were nicely highlighted in the magazine. You motivated me to take out the kit box and look inside again. Took some more closeup pictures.
