Painting a tub?

Post by SteveK »

Apparently at some point I bought a tub and buggy nose off eBay (recently too, surprised the heck out of me when I found it in my bin), and it looked like it had been stripped and painted metallic blue. Has anybody had success stripping the chassis to bare metal and using various spray paints to coat the chassis? I'm thinking the John Deere tractor paints maybe.

I also have T2 chassis that was stripped and coated/painted red, but it's a terrible job and it flaking and full of orange peel, and the included nose plate was just black, so that needs to be redone too.

sure they can be painted. It just won't be as durable as anodizing or powder coating. I would media blast the parts so they have a nice uniform rough surface to bond to, wipe down with acetone, and use at least an epoxy style paint. One of the standard paint vendors maybe duplicolor? makes this awesome stuff called 'roll bar paint' that gives you a nice low gloss finish, it's an epoxy style paint so it's pretty tough.

otherwise, you would need a multi-part paint system used for automotive finish to get anything tougher.

I really want a media blasting cabinet, but I'm trying to move house this summer, maybe even move states (or at least be ready), so maybe a handheld blaster might be an easier thing to handle.

How much is an 'acceptable' powder coating or anodizing job?

I just did one of mine. Just scuffed it really well with fine sand paper, primed it with self etching primer and painted it with about 5 coats of semi gloss black tremclad. It's hard to tell it apart from a powder coat or ano job but i'm sure it's not as durable. Be fine for a shelfer i would think
