so i went to http://www.losi.com/ yesterday and saw a new ad for what looked to be a duck truck (land, water army truck http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DUKW) this was exciting. i always wanted an rc like this.. i knew it was april 1st but thought they wanted to release at the beginning of the month ,and why would they waste the time on jokes for the site.maybe they were starting to realize they need to make different stuff people want to buy not just the same stuff everyone else makes or the same rc they make just smaller..no.. april fools..but there the fools..i would consider spending the money on something like this..could someone please send me a link to tell them what i think...i think its pathetic that making something unique and different then everyone else is just a joke to this company..

Well, losi is no longer the same company. It may not just be them...it's probably a sign of the industry.

This is slightly off your topic, but I think the industry (and what it use to promote) has changed significantly. Before an rc car was considered a "model" that you put together. Building a car was half the fun...it gave the person the satisfaction os seeing their "creation" actually run. I know there are a lot of benefits of an RTR, but I absolutely hate them.

I can't stand the fact that grown men bring their cars / trucks to the local hobbytown USA to have them repaired. Gentlemen...grow some balls and get your hands dirty.

It appears that the Traxxas mentality (no offense ot the traxxas guys) has become the norm. Rant off...

highwayracer

I agree, it used to be that you not only had to drive them good but you had to build them good.

RTRs are the answer to today's "instant gratification" mentality - in the same manner that video games fulfill the passing interest someone might have in playing guitar by getting GuitarHero instead of actually learning to play the real thing.

That's why I would rather get an SC10 truck kit, than a Slash, don't get me wrong, slashes are good entry level trucks, and tons of fun, but I like to build my own cars, just to get a feel for them and know what goes where.

As far as the April fools Joke, maybe bad taste in their part, but if you put it into perspective, look at what they did to NASCAR fans....

I appreciate a good sense of humor.

You want a duck truck? Make one.

People used to water proof their monster trucks, the High Roller was advertised as being water proof and able to run in water. It wouldn't be hard to make a Clod water resistant and floatable either. Ask Halgar.

Personally, I've always wanted a radio-controlled stripper......

......but I don't see that happening either.

this is the problem with the world ..unless theres a big market, and a ton of money to be made, people will not even think of doing it..dont get me wrong its not like the dukw is my 1st choice for amphibious rc .that would be a rerelease of the old high roller(or a waterproof clod like melvinsarmy said) but if the dukw was made good id want one.. some people thought the dukw would be a cool rc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtjlsszcgI4&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP6bylBg79Y&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-yovyZwvLk&feature=related

Sorry, but the problem seems to be with people wanting something for nothing, wanting an item in which there's no market, that haven't sat down and thought about it long enough to figure out manufacturing costs let alone the box art required to put out ANY kit -- and somehow rationalizing there is "a ton of money to be made" on something there really is no market for.

I mean think about it -- has Losi EVER made boats, have they EVER made anything other than cars and trucks (and primarily racers). We're not talking about Tamiya here......

I kept wishing for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders for Christmas,
but that didn't make it a realistic expectation. ;)

You're kidding right? surely you don't think a company would produce something so they could lose money. Bringing a vehicle to market is a hugely expensive process. A company needs to be able to recoup their costs.

I think Losi makes great products! I've been racing their cars since the early 90s. That being said, I switched over to AE platforms last year as that's the norm at most tracks these days. There is no problem with Losi products or customer service, they just don't place much emphasis on racing these days. I don't blame them, as the bashing community is much, much larger than the racing community and it makes sense to market to the masses. It's easier to be competitve with AE these days because you aren't the only guy out there and you can get setup tips and support from all the racers at the track. I'm running AE now, but wouldn't mind switching back over if Losi gets back to grassroots racing.

Which will happen about the time The Eagles get back together.

Truth is ALL of the majors have lost touch with their "grass roots" past -- started the day they started selling their souls to Horizon (Losi) and ThunderTiger (Associated), and turned into a no-way-out conundrum when they jumped on the (traxass) RTR bandwagon -- holes none will ever dig their way out of. Suggesting that one is any more (or less) guilty than the other is silly. 8)

Give you a break? I think that's what everyone thought when reading your first post.

But let's look at the little picture since you are refusing to look at the big one.
1) It WAS April Fools Day for cripes sake. Give the web-nimrods at Losi a break. I probably saw about 50 AFD-related posts on the 'Net the other day, and I won't even get into the AFD work-related stuff I've seen over the years, so suggessting the guys/gals at Horizon couldn't have a little fun teasing "something" is a little over the top.
2) Look at the flip side of things. Think about how much bitching and moaning there would have been had Losi actually come out with an RC-military replica vehicle... Not only the hardcore racers been having a fit, there would have people been rolling over in their graves worldwide bemoaning the idea that "it was bad enough that the company had progressed away from it's racer roots, but now it was no better than tamiya or radioshack."
3) It was an AD, just something (hopefully) not meant to be taken so seriously. How many times have any of us seen a downright dumb (to us anyway) on TV or otherwise. Seems like every other day my wifey is commenting on some stupid commercial, and I just tell her, "well, I agree, but somebody thought it a hoot AND PAID FOR IT."
4) DIY. If you're so bound and determined to have something different, or an abortion of a "amphibious monster truck" -- maybe it time you dig out a boat and a MT and a dremel and get to work. It is a hobby, so nobody's stopping ya.

Maybe next time don't take it so seriously, or take anyone's response to heart.
