I have a set of 2.0 rear HPI rims for the RC10 that are goldish colored. My question is, strip them or not?

If you like the gold keep them as they are . If not I used caustic soda to strip mine but be carefull caustic soda is nasty stuff. I found the caustic soda at home depot just mix some up with water it dosn't take much and let the soda work on the rims it doesn't take long for the plating to come off.Pull em out a couple of times and use a old tooth brush and go over them until you get all the plating off. Like I say NASTY STUFF make sure you DON'T REUSE the container OR THE BRUSH that you used for stripping just trash it!!. After you strip the rims you can dye them . I used black rit dye on my rims look at the pics . Once again make sure you TRASH the container AND THE BRUSH that you used for stripping . USE RUBBER GLOVES an just keep a eye out on whats going on .Maybe someone will post some other ways to strip the plating this is just what I have found that so far works the best for me. I have have used oven cleaner and other strippers but they all have caustic soda in them .

I normally use spray on oven cleaner to strip plastic of plating. I just wanted to know being that these rims are somewhat hard to come by these days.

If thats what you use thats great . If you like the gold keep em it if not strip em an go for what you like. Just trying to say if you don't like the gold there are ways to strip the plating and go for the color that you like . Go for what you like and Im sure you will be happy with the results.

I didn't mean it to come off that way as I really do appreciate what you posted. The info on the stuff you have used was very helpful and taken into consideration. I just have used oven cleaner in the past and know that it works well, I also have some on hand . I guess I did not word my original post good enough to convey what I wanted to know. I guess I was needing someone else to give opinion on striping them or not, that's all. Thank you very much for the information and pictures.

Just do what you like and you will be happy .

if you have a matching front set and they are all in good shape keep 'em gold for a shelfer. If you aren't into shelfers strip 'em because they will look like crap after a few batteries anyway. I'm not much into shelfers or the color gold so the sets I have had in the past all ended up stripped and dyed.

Unfortunately I only have the rears but wanted use them as I'm not really into the gold rims. I don't want to toss them. Might go ahead and strip them then dye them black.
