Mugen Bulldog

Post by Bormac »

Hi guys, here's some pics of a car I have been trying to find the time to work on. I picked up this Bulldog in a trade with an old racer who had it collecting dust in his shed for many years. Apparently it hasn't been run and aside from a section at the cars front being melted off (what the?) there is not a scratch anywhere on this car. Never simply happy enough to keep anything i have stock standard I wanted to swap out the outer hubs for some old Kyosho Optima hubs and axles. Ofcourse this project has just begun and I have a handful of ideas up my sleeve on this one. Eventually I'll end up with a fibreglass lower chassis plate, lock off the rear wheel steering and find some ballraced levers for up front. Just happy to get this one going for now. If anyone needs any new spares I have a set of rims and tires, lower plate with battery clamp, the original hubs/axles and a few other bits i wont be using in this car.

Hey,
the Bulldog is the first rc car i owned in 1984 (could have been the Zerda but...), so it's a load of touching memories to me. I was a beginner so i screwed up the building wich needs knowledges (building ball diffs mostly). i guess mugen targeted the competition with this buggy but nothing actually worked correctly, the car needed lots of work to run seriously. The job you made is actually very nice. something good would be to redesign the steering system which is pretty poor. to me the main problem remains the ball diffs which are badly designed and almost impossible to modify (the ball stop can't be replaced by a real one with hardened washers, no place). However the center ball diff at least works.
I have a similar project as your for one of my bulldogs.
cheers

Greg

Nice car Jase :D

BTW I think I found a local seller of the G10 fibreglass sheet you were asking about.

I'll give you the details on Saturday night if you're going to be at Redbank Plains.

Looks like a fun project, if I may give a hint:
take a look at the predators rear suspension set up. It might be worth trying to copy that onto the buldog.

Nice car!!

I've have a suggestion for modifying the car...more visual than performance. I've always wanted to replace one of the side plates with lexan...just to see the drive train with the red pulleys. I'm keeping my car stock, so I won't be doing that...I'd love to see it on someone elses car.

Also, when I rebuilt mine, the ball diffs weren't very smooth...it almost felt like the balls were not the correct size. I had to dremel off some material from the pulley (part that the balls fit into) to get it to turn smoothly.

Regards,
highwayracer

"I wanted to swap out the outer hubs for some old Kyosho Optima hubs and axles"

Bormac: Do you mean that the original optima hubs and axles actually fit the Bulldogs?

Can you confirm? I am on a bulldog project too

No, no intention to make anyone jealous :D just wanna get some idea to make my bulldog more 'driveable' in spite of the antique design and poor steering system....

I guess you have all seen the bulldog in the 'old car run' section of the time-tunnel site already?
